Chapter 8 - WHAT THE MAID REMEMBERED

Elena showed Bell the messages instead of going to the hotel alone.

She knew the story men like Vale expected: a desperate woman sneaking through a service door to save the few things she owned.

This time, she wouldn't give him that story.

Bell brought her to the hotel the next morning, with another detective waiting in the loading office.

Vale greeted them with a strained smile.

“A misunderstanding.”

“Then this should be easy,” Bell said.

Elena walked through the laundry room. For years, she had passed beneath its bright lights without anyone looking up.

Now every worker watched her.

Vale unlocked her locker. Her bag had been shoved inside, wet and smelling of detergent.

The birthday card was torn.

For a moment, she was fourteen again, holding the last note from a boy moved to a different foster home three states away.

Vale watched her face.

“Sentimental things get damaged,” he said softly. “That's life.”

Bell stepped closer.

“Keep talking.”

His mouth shut.

The loading-office recorder was gone. Four clean rectangles marked where it had sat in the dust.

“Equipment failure,” Vale said.

Elena looked at the waste bins, then at the supply shelf.

A fresh roll of gray packing tape sat beside the gloves. The hotel used brown tape for shipments. Gray tape belonged to maintenance.

“The basement cage,” she told Bell.

“What?”

“Broken equipment goes downstairs. Vale makes maintenance keep everything until the warranty claim clears.”

His face changed.

Bell noticed.

They found the recorder in a sealed carton beneath a broken vacuum. Its cables had been cut, but the drive remained inside.

As detectives collected it, a laundry worker caught Elena's sleeve.

“Tell them to check the van log.”

Vale lunged toward him.

The second detective blocked his path.

Elena recognized the worker's terror. She also recognized what it cost him to speak anyway.

The log named a driver: Frank Doran.

Beside his delivery time was an authorization number issued by Moretti household security.

And clipped behind the log was a cash receipt for an unscheduled pickup.

The signature at the bottom read V. Moretti.

Vale stopped claiming it was a misunderstanding.

He asked for a lawyer.
