Chapter 6 - THE TRUST

The family attorney, Robert Hale, arrived in the security room carrying six years of Whitmore trust documents.

“I found it.”

Alexander turned.

“What?”

“The clause Cynthia was actually after.”

Robert opened the agreement.

Everyone had focused on the unborn child.

That was the distraction.

The real clause was buried fourteen pages later.

If Alexander died while his designated heir was still a minor, temporary voting control of his shares would transfer to the child’s legal guardian.

Cynthia.

Alexander stared at the document.

“So she wasn’t planning for the baby to die.”

Robert shook his head.

“She was planning for you to die.”

Silence.

Vanessa’s fake pregnancy suddenly made perfect sense.

Create an heir.

Name Cynthia guardian.

Move Alexander’s shares into the trust.

Then remove Alexander.

Cynthia would control nearly forty percent of Whitmore Holdings.

Combined with Charles’s shares—

Alexander finished the thought.

“They would control the company.”

Robert nodded.

Alexander looked toward the monitor showing Cynthia.

“My father is part of this.”

Elena spoke quietly.

“He started it.”

Then Vanessa appeared on the conference-room camera.

She had moved closer to Sophie.

“Cynthia.”

“What?”

“I’m done.”

Cynthia laughed.

“You don’t get to be done.”

“I agreed to fake a pregnancy.”

Vanessa’s voice trembled.

“I agreed because you told me Alexander was stealing from the company.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

Vanessa continued.

“You told me we were protecting the Whitmore family.”

“You believed what you wanted to believe.”

Vanessa stared at her sister.

“You were going to kill him?”

Cynthia didn’t answer.

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

Then Sophie did something that nearly stopped my heart.

She stood.

Walked toward Vanessa.

And held out her hand.

“Come with me.”

Vanessa stared at her.

“There’s another door.”

Sophie pointed toward the wall.

“My mom showed me the hotel plans once.”

Behind the movable conference wall was a maintenance corridor.

Cynthia didn’t know.

But Sophie did.

May you like

Vanessa took her hand.

And together they ran.
