Chapter 9 - THE TRUTH ABOUT THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

Adrian couldn’t speak.
The voice on the phone was impossible.
“You’re alive?”
A quiet laugh came from the other side.
“Yes.”
His hand tightened around the phone.
“Who are you?”
The room became silent.
Everyone watched him.
Then the voice answered:
“My name is Sophia.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
Sophia.
The name he had not heard in seven years.
The name connected to the biggest mystery of his life.
Lena looked shocked.
“She called?”
Adrian looked at her.
“You know her?”
Lena slowly nodded.
“She was there that night.”
Adrian felt confused.
“What night?”
Nobody answered.
The voice continued.
“Adrian, you need to understand something.”
“What?”
“Your father didn’t separate you from Lena because he wanted money.”
A pause.
“He did it because he discovered the truth.”
Adrian looked at Richard.
“What truth?”
Sophia whispered:
“Your accident wasn’t an accident.”
The room froze.
Adrian felt a cold feeling in his chest.
“What are you saying?”
“Someone tried to kill you.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Lena looked down.
Marcus remained silent.
Adrian saw all their reactions.
Everyone knew.
Everyone except him.
“Who?”
Sophia hesitated.
Then answered:
“Daniel.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“He was my best friend.”
“He was never your friend.”
The words hurt because they sounded true.
Sophia continued:
“He wanted your company.”
“He wanted your inheritance.”
“He wanted your life.”
Adrian looked at the children.
Then at Lena.
“And my family?”
Sophia became quiet.
Then said:
“That was never part of the plan.”
“What does that mean?”
“Daniel didn’t know Lena was pregnant.”
Adrian froze.
“He thought he erased your past.”
A pause.
“But when he discovered the children existed…”
Sophia’s voice became darker.
“He decided they had to disappear too.”
Lena covered her mouth.
Emma hugged her leg.
Adrian felt anger rising.
“He wanted my children gone?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t anyone stop him?”
Nobody answered.
Then Richard finally spoke.
“Because I did.”
Everyone looked at him.
Adrian stared.
“You?”
Richard nodded.
“I found out too late.”
“You knew Daniel was trying to destroy me.”
“Yes.”
“And you still let me suffer?”
Richard looked broken.
“I thought keeping you alive was more important.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
His voice trembled.
“You let me lose seven years with my children.”
Richard looked down.
“I know.”
For the first time, Adrian saw regret in his father’s eyes.
Not the powerful businessman.
Not the man who controlled everything.
Just a father who made terrible choices.
Then suddenly, a loud noise came from outside.
A car door slammed.
Marcus looked through the window.
His face changed.
“What?”
Adrian asked.
Marcus whispered:
“He’s here.”
Everyone became tense.
“Who?”
Marcus looked at Adrian.
“Daniel.”
The farmhouse lights suddenly turned off again.
A voice came from outside.
“Adrian.”
Daniel’s voice.
Calm.
Confident.
Like nothing had happened.
“You spent all day searching for answers.”
A pause.
“But you forgot one thing.”
Adrian stepped toward the window.
“What?”
Daniel laughed softly.
“You were never looking for the person who betrayed you.”
Silence.
“You were looking for the person who survived.”
The front door handle began moving.
Slowly.
Daniel whispered:
“And now I’m here to finish what I started.”
May you like
The door opened.
And Adrian finally came face to face with the man who destroyed his life.
