“A Baby Called Me Daddy” / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - THE WEDDING THAT ENDED BEFORE IT BEGAN

“STOP THE WEDDING!”

The scream echoed through the grand marble hall just seconds before Victoria Harrington was supposed to say “I do.”

Every guest turned toward the entrance.

The wedding music stopped.

The violinist lowered his bow.

Adrian Cross stood beside the altar, confused, as a young woman rushed inside carrying a baby wrapped in a white blanket.

A little girl, no older than five, held tightly onto the woman’s dress.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were filled with fear.

Victoria smiled for half a second.

Then she saw who was standing there.

Her smile disappeared.

“You.”

The word came out almost like a whisper.

The young woman stopped walking.

“Victoria…”

The entire room became silent.

Adrian looked between them.

“Does someone want to explain what’s happening?”

The woman took a shaky breath.

Her name was Clara Bennett.

And she had just walked into the most expensive wedding of the year with two children who were about to destroy everything Adrian believed about his life.

Victoria stepped forward.

“This is my wedding. You have no right to come here.”

Clara looked around at the hundreds of guests watching her.

“I didn’t come here to ruin your wedding.”

Her voice trembled.

“I came because I had nowhere else to go.”

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“Security.”

Several guests gasped.

The little girl immediately grabbed Clara’s hand.

“Mommy…”

Clara looked down.

“It’s okay, sweetheart.”

But the little girl wasn’t looking at Victoria.

She was staring behind her.

At Adrian.

Her eyes widened.

Then she whispered one word.

“Daddy.”

The room froze.

Adrian stopped breathing.

“What did she say?”

Nobody answered.

The little girl took one step forward.

“Daddy!”

Her voice became louder.

Adrian slowly looked at Clara.

Clara’s eyes filled with tears.

Victoria immediately stepped between them.

“She’s confused.”

But before anyone could react, the baby in Clara’s arms suddenly reached toward Adrian.

Small hands.

Tiny fingers.

A familiar expression.

“Daddy.”

The second child said it too.

Adrian felt like the entire world had shifted.

“No…”

He shook his head.

“That’s impossible.”

Victoria grabbed his arm.

“Adrian, don’t listen to her.”

He looked at her.

For the first time that day, he didn’t see his future wife.

He saw someone hiding something.

“Who is she?”

Victoria stayed silent.

“Victoria.”

His voice became colder.

“Who is she?”

Clara slowly reached under her dress.

She pulled out a small silver necklace.

The moment Adrian saw it, his face changed.

Because he knew that necklace.

He had given it to someone years ago.

Someone Victoria promised was gone forever.

The family crest engraved on the pendant belonged to the Cross family.

His family.

Clara handed him an old photograph.

Adrian looked down.

And his hands started shaking.

The picture showed him seven years earlier.

Standing beside a young woman.

A baby in his arms.

A smile on his face.

A life he didn’t remember.

A life someone had stolen from him.

He looked at Clara.

“Where did you get this?”

Clara swallowed.

“Because that woman was my sister.”

Adrian’s heart stopped.

“What?”

“She never left you.”

The room became silent.

“She didn’t abandon you.”

Clara looked directly at Victoria.

“She was forced away.”

Adrian slowly turned.

Victoria’s face had lost all color.

“You knew.”

It wasn’t a question.

It was an accusation.

Victoria opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Adrian removed his wedding ring.

The same ring he had planned to wear for the rest of his life.

He dropped it onto the marble floor.

The sound echoed through the hall.

“The wedding is over.”

Everyone gasped.

Victoria stared at him.

“Adrian, listen to me.”

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“I spent seven years believing a lie.”

He looked at the children.

Then at Clara.

“Tell me everything.”

Clara reached into her bag.

She pulled out a sealed envelope.

“I wanted to give this to you years ago.”

She placed it in his hand.

“But someone made sure you never received it.”

Adrian stared at the envelope.

“Who?”

Clara looked toward Victoria.

Then toward someone standing in the crowd.

Someone Adrian never expected.

“Your father.”

Adrian’s face changed.

Because his father had been dead for three years.

And yet somehow...

He was still part of the secret.

Clara whispered:

“The truth about your children was never buried with him.”

She looked around the silent wedding hall.

“It was buried with the people who helped him.”

Adrian opened the envelope.

And the first document inside made his entire body go cold.

Because it had his signature.

May you like

But he had never signed it.
