Chapter 13 - THE HOUSE WITH THE YELLOW DOOR

One year later, the first Claire House opened.
It wasn’t a mansion.
Claire insisted on that.
It was a warm brick building with a yellow front door.
Twelve private family rooms.
A legal assistance office.
Childcare.
Counseling rooms.
A garden.
And, because Lily refused to compromise, a small fenced area for pets.
Ethan stood outside during the opening ceremony.
There were no giant company banners.
No expensive gala.
No champagne tower.
Just families.
Staff.
Volunteers.
And Lily running around wearing a yellow dress almost identical in color to the faded one she had worn the day she first arrived at Ethan’s mansion.
Except this dress was clean.
And she had both shoes.
Maria stood beside Ethan.
“You kept your promise.”
“What promise?”
“To keep her safe.”
Ethan watched Lily.
“She saved us first.”
Maria smiled.
Claire approached.
She handed Ethan a small box.
“What’s this?”
“Open it.”
Inside was the old photograph Lily had carried.
Claire by the lake.
But it had been restored and placed in a frame.
Beside it was a second photograph.
Ethan, Claire, and Lily together.
“Before and after,” Claire said.
Ethan swallowed.
“I’m not crying.”
“Of course not.”
“Dust.”
“Outside?”
“A lot of dust.”
Claire laughed.
Then Lily ran toward them.
“Uncle Ethan!”
“What?”
“You have to come inside.”
“Why?”
“There’s someone here.”
Ethan followed her.
A woman stood near the entrance holding the hand of a little boy.
She looked nervous.
“Mr. Vale?”
“Yes?”
“I wanted to thank you.”
“You don’t have to.”
“Yes.”
She looked around.
“My son and I left home last night.”
Ethan didn’t ask why.
She continued.
“I had nowhere to go.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Someone at the hospital told me about this place.”
Ethan looked at Claire.
Claire looked at Lily.
That was the moment all three understood.
This wasn’t about Sabrina anymore.
It wasn’t even about what had been stolen.
It was about what could be built from what remained.
Lily tugged Ethan’s sleeve.
“Come on.”
“Where?”
“I’m showing Noah the playground.”
The little boy smiled shyly.
Ethan stepped aside.
“Go.”
The two children ran toward the back garden.
Claire watched them.
“Dad would have liked this.”
Ethan nodded.
“Yeah.”
Then a black vehicle stopped across the street.
Ethan noticed immediately.
A man stepped out.
For a moment, old fear returned.
Then Detective Hale raised one hand.
“Relax.”
Ethan exhaled.
“You need a quieter car.”
Hale smiled.
“I came with news.”
Claire approached.
“What happened?”
Hale handed her an envelope.
“Sabrina’s final appeal was denied.”
Claire stared at it.
The chapter was finally closed.
She looked at Ethan.
Then she tore the unopened envelope in half.
Hale blinked.
“You’re not going to read it?”
“No.”
May you like
Claire dropped the pieces into a trash can.
“She’s taken enough of my time.”
