Chapter 18 – The Mastermind

The fingerprint report pointed to Victor Kane.
Charles recognized the name immediately.
"My family's longtime attorney."
"He retired years ago."
Detective Brooks shook her head.
"No."
"He changed his identity."
"He continued managing several Ashcroft properties through shell companies."
Police surrounded Victor's secluded country house before dawn.
He surrendered without resistance.
Grace watched as detectives carried dozens of sealed boxes from the basement.
Each contained contracts.
Financial records.
Construction plans.
Hidden beneath them lay the original blueprints for every secret room.
Victor smiled calmly.
"You've spent years looking for monsters."
"You never noticed the accountant."
Charles stared at him.
"Why?"
Victor answered without emotion.
"Secrets are worth more than money."
"Power belongs to whoever controls the truth."
Detective Brooks placed him under arrest.
Victor laughed quietly.
"You still haven't found everything."
Grace frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Victor looked toward Charles.
"Ask your father."
Charles' voice became almost a whisper.
"My father is dead."
Victor smiled.
May you like
"That's what everyone believes."
