Chapter 11 - MONTEREY

Adrian did not bring Sophie.
He left her with Mercer and two federal agents Rachel trusted.
Then he and Rachel drove south.
The Monterey estate sat high above the Pacific, hidden behind iron gates and cypress trees.
Adrian held the brass key.
“Any idea what it opens?”
Rachel shook her head.
“Your father clearly thinks you have it.”
“What could be worth all this?”
“Something that can destroy him.”
They entered through a service gate after dark.
Margaret was tied to a chair in the library.
Vanessa stood beside her.
Adrian raised his gun.
“Move away from her.”
Vanessa smiled.
“There he is.”
Rachel aimed at Vanessa.
“Hands where I can see them.”
Vanessa slowly raised them.
“You know, Adrian, none of this had to happen.”
“You pushed my daughter into a pool.”
“I needed the bear.”
“She could have drowned.”
“She didn’t.”
Adrian’s finger tightened around the trigger.
Rachel spoke sharply.
“Adrian.”
Vanessa looked amused.
“She knows you want to shoot me.”
“I do.”
“Then why don’t you?”
“Because Sophie already lost one parent because of you.”
Vanessa’s smile faded.
“I won’t make her lose another.”
A slow clap came from the doorway.
Richard Cole stepped into the room.
Seventy years old.
Gray hair.
Perfect suit.
Alive.
Adrian felt like he was looking at a ghost.
Richard smiled.
“You finally grew up.”
Adrian stared at the man who had controlled his childhood with silence and money.
“You murdered my wife.”
Richard shrugged.
“She became inconvenient.”
Adrian moved forward.
Rachel blocked him slightly.
Richard laughed.
“Still emotional.”
“Where does the key go?”
“Upstairs.”
“What’s up there?”
“My insurance policy.”
Richard led them to a study.
Behind a painting was an antique steel safe.
Adrian inserted the key.
It fit.
Inside were dozens of ledgers.
Hard drives.
Passports.
Cash.
Photographs.
A complete record of decades of bribery, fraud, political payoffs, and financial crimes.
Rachel whispered, “Jesus.”
Richard smiled.
“Enough leverage to keep powerful men obedient.”
Adrian looked through the files.
Then he found Emily’s name.
A folder.
He opened it.
Inside were photographs of Emily meeting federal investigators.
“She was going to expose you.”
“Yes.”
“So you killed her.”
Richard looked almost bored.
“I protected my family.”
“You destroyed it.”
“Same thing, sometimes.”
Vanessa appeared in the doorway.
Her gun was pointed at Richard.
Everyone froze.
Richard frowned.
“What are you doing?”
Vanessa’s hand trembled.
“You were going to leave me with nothing.”
“You failed.”
“I did everything you asked.”
“You fell in love with Adrian.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with rage.
“I deserved him.”
Adrian stared at her.
“You murdered my wife.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“She was going to take everything away.”
“She was my wife.”
“She didn’t understand you.”
“You don’t understand me either.”
Vanessa’s face twisted.
Then she turned the gun toward Adrian.
“If I can’t have you—”
A gunshot exploded.
Adrian flinched.
But he wasn’t hit.
Vanessa looked down.
Blood spread across her stomach.
Richard was holding a small pistol.
Vanessa collapsed.
Rachel fired at Richard.
He dropped his gun and stumbled backward.
Then he smiled.
“You think this ends here?”
He reached into his pocket.
Rachel shouted.
“Hands up!”
Richard held a small remote.
Adrian saw the red button.
“What is that?”
Richard pressed it.
An alarm began screaming.
Then the entire house shook.
May you like
Richard smiled.
“You should run.”
