Chapter 1 - THE PUSH

Sophie hit the water so hard she couldn’t scream.
For one terrifying second, the eight-year-old disappeared beneath the blue surface of the pool.
Her little hands came up first.
Then her face.
“Daddy!”
She coughed, kicked wildly, and tried to grab the edge.
Standing two feet away, Vanessa didn’t move.
She just smiled.
“Maybe next time you’ll learn not to touch things that don’t belong in my house.”
Sophie’s soaked brown hair covered her eyes.
“My bear!”
The old teddy bear floated several feet away, dark with water.
Sophie reached for it.
That bear had belonged to her mother.
Not a toy from a store.
Not something that could be replaced.
Her mother, Emily, had held that bear against Sophie’s chest in the hospital two days before she died.
“Whenever you miss me,” Emily had whispered, “you hold him tight.”
Sophie had done exactly that every night since.
Until Vanessa ripped it from her arms.
And threw it into the pool.
“Vanessa!” Sophie screamed. “Please!”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“You wanted it so badly. Go get it.”
Then she had shoved her.
The glass doors behind them suddenly slammed open.
“What the hell is going on?”
Adrian Cole froze.
His daughter was in the pool.
Fully dressed.
Crying.
Vanessa stood over her.
Adrian’s face went white.
Then red.
“Sophie!”
He ran.
Vanessa stepped in front of him.
“Adrian, wait. She slipped—”
He shoved past her so hard she stumbled against a lounge chair.
“You can’t swim!” Adrian shouted.
He jumped into the pool wearing his shoes, his watch, everything.
Sophie wrapped both arms around his neck the second he reached her.
“Daddy!”
“I’ve got you.”
She was shaking.
“I’ve got you, baby.”
Adrian carried her toward the steps.
Then Sophie looked over his shoulder.
“My bear.”
Adrian saw it floating near the deep end.
He grabbed it with one hand and climbed out.
Vanessa stood several feet away, her expression suddenly nervous.
“Adrian, you’re overreacting.”
He didn’t even look at her.
He wrapped Sophie in a towel.
“Did she push you?”
Sophie stared at Vanessa.
Vanessa stared back.
Something in her eyes made Sophie hesitate.
Then Adrian touched his daughter’s cheek.
“Tell me the truth.”
Sophie whispered, “She threw Mommy’s bear in first.”
Adrian slowly raised his head.
Vanessa laughed once.
“Oh, come on. It’s an old stuffed animal.”
Sophie began crying harder.
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“It belonged to Emily.”
“I know.”
The words came out too quickly.
Adrian paused.
Vanessa’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But he noticed.
Before he could ask anything, the soaked teddy bear slipped from his hand and hit the stone patio.
The old seam along its back tore open.
A piece of cotton stuffing fell out.
Then something metallic struck the ground.
Clink.
Everyone went silent.
Adrian bent down.
Between his fingers was a small brass key.
A number was engraved into it.
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Adrian looked at the key.
Then at Vanessa.
“What is this?”
Vanessa’s lips parted.
No answer came.
Sophie wiped tears from her face.
“Mommy put it there.”
Adrian turned sharply.
“What?”
Sophie pointed at the bear.
May you like
“Mommy told me never to let Vanessa have him.”
And for the first time, Adrian saw real fear in Vanessa’s eyes.
