Chapter 5 - The Video
My hands shook as I watched the footage.
Smoke.
Twisted steel.
Firefighters shouting.
Then Alex appeared.
Someone yelled...
"Lieutenant!"
"The pregnant woman is over there!"
Alex looked directly toward me.
Directly.
His eyes met mine.
He saw me.
He knew exactly where I was.
Then another firefighter pointed toward Valerie.
Alex answered without hesitation.
"I'll take Valerie."
"Someone else gets the woman."
No panic.
No confusion.
No mistake.
A choice.
A deliberate choice.
The recording ended.
Something inside me finally broke.
Not my heart.
May you like
My marriage.
