Chapter 4 - A Stranger Shows Up

Hours later...

I woke inside intensive care.

Machines surrounded me.

My daughter was alive.

Barely.

She had been delivered early.

She weighed less than two pounds.

She was inside the neonatal intensive care unit.

Connected to tubes.

Fighting every second.

A knock came at my door.

It wasn't Alex.

It was Mason.

The young firefighter.

He carried a paper cup of coffee.

"I couldn't stop thinking about what happened."

He hesitated.

"Lieutenant Alex ordered everyone to prioritize Valerie."

I frowned.

"What?"

Mason nodded.

"He said she had a chest injury."

"But..."

He swallowed.

"When I found you..."

"You were bleeding."

"I honestly thought you were dying."

He reached into his pocket.

"I think you should have this."

It was a body camera memory card.

"I wasn't supposed to keep it."

May you like

"But I couldn't erase what I saw."
