Chapter 7 — The Apology She Never Expected

A year after the elevator accident, Alex visited Lucy.
He didn’t bring flowers.
He didn’t bring excuses.
He brought the old wedding ring.
“I kept this because I hoped someday you would want it back.”
Lucy looked at it.
“And now?”
Alex swallowed.
“Now I know I don’t deserve to ask.”
That surprised her.
For the first time, Alex wasn’t trying to fix his image.
He was accepting what he had broken.
“I was supposed to run toward you,” he whispered.
“But when you needed me most, I ran away.”
Lucy looked at him silently.
“I’m sorry.”
Not a firefighter apology.
May you like
Not a husband apology.
A human apology.
