Chapter 1 — The Woman He Left Behind

The platinum ring landed in Mark’s firefighter glove.

For a moment, the young firefighter didn’t understand what Lucy was doing.

He stared at the ring.

Then at her pale face.

Then toward the hallway where Alex had disappeared carrying Valerie.

“Ma’am… this is your wedding ring.”

Lucy slowly nodded.

“It was.”

Those two words felt heavier than anything Mark had heard inside that elevator.

Lucy Miller had spent seven hours trapped in a metal box, fighting for herself and her unborn daughter.

But the person she trusted most had been standing inches away…

and still chose someone else.

Mark wanted to say something.

Anything.

But there were no words that could fix what he had witnessed.

The paramedics finally reached Lucy.

They rushed her onto a stretcher and connected oxygen immediately.

“Twenty-four weeks pregnant,” Mark told them. “Reduced fetal movement. She was conscious when I found her.”

One paramedic looked confused.

“Her husband?”

Mark looked toward the ambulance area.

Alex was standing there beside Valerie.

“He’s a firefighter,” Mark answered quietly.

“But he wasn’t the one who rescued her.”

That sentence followed Alex long after the rescue ended.

Because for the first time in his career…

Lieutenant Alex Davis had failed to save the person who needed him most.

At the hospital, doctors monitored Lucy and the baby through the night.

Alex arrived two hours later.

He expected anger.

He expected tears.

He expected Lucy to scream at him.

But when he entered the room, Lucy was silent.

That scared him more.

“Lucy…”

She didn’t look at him.

“Is she okay?”

Alex froze.

“She?”

“My daughter.”

His face softened.

“The baby is stable.”

Lucy closed her eyes.

A small breath escaped her.

Not relief for him.

Relief for her child.

Alex stepped closer.

“I’m sorry.”

Lucy finally looked at him.

And Alex realized something had changed.

The woman looking back at him was still Lucy.

But the part of her that trusted him completely was gone.

“You ran past me,” she whispered.

Alex’s face fell.

“Lucy, Valerie was injured—”

“No.”

Her voice remained calm.

“You didn’t run past me because she needed help.”

She looked directly into his eyes.

“You ran past me because you wanted to save her.”

May you like

Alex had no answer.

Because he knew she was right.
