Chapter 13 - CARMELA’S CONFESSION

They returned to the mansion at noon.

Carmela was sitting alone in the dining room.

She seemed smaller.

Older.

Paolo placed a document in front of her.

The first authorization concerning Elise.

It did not order her death.

It authorized surveillance.

Asset restrictions.

Legal pressure.

And removal of Ava from Elise’s custody “if necessary.”

At the bottom was Carmela’s signature.

Paolo sat across from her.

“You signed it.”

“Yes.”

Elise stood beside him.

Carmela could not meet her eyes.

Paolo asked, “Why?”

Carmela swallowed.

“Because I hated what I couldn’t control.”

Paolo said nothing.

She continued.

“Your father listened to me. Your sister depended on me. The board respected me.”

Her voice shook.

“Then you married Elise.”

Elise’s eyes narrowed.

Carmela finally looked at her.

“You didn’t fear me.”

“No.”

“You questioned me.”

“Yes.”

“You made Paolo question me.”

Elise shook her head.

“No. Paolo learned to question you because you kept giving him reasons.”

Carmela looked down.

“You’re right.”

Paolo almost didn’t recognize his mother.

She had never admitted another person was right without finding a way to punish them later.

“What changed?” he asked.

Carmela looked toward the window.

“Ava.”

Paolo stiffened.

“Don’t use her.”

“I’m not.”

Tears filled Carmela’s eyes.

“When she hid from me today, I finally saw what I had become.”

Elise’s expression remained hard.

Carmela continued.

“I spent my entire life saying everything I did was for the family.”

She looked at Paolo.

“But when Ava was afraid of me, I realized I had become the thing the family needed protection from.”

Silence.

Paolo leaned back.

“What do you want from me?”

“Nothing.”

“That would be a first.”

She accepted the insult.

“I’m giving up my board seat.”

Paolo looked at her.

“And my shares.”

Elise blinked.

Carmela slid an envelope across the table.

Signed documents.

“I’ve also prepared a statement for investigators.”

Paolo did not touch it.

“You understand what that means.”

“Yes.”

“You could go to prison.”

“Yes.”

Talia entered quietly.

“Mom?”

Carmela looked at her daughter.

“I’m sorry.”

Talia started crying.

Carmela stood.

“I taught you loyalty meant silence.”

She shook her head.

“I was wrong.”

Talia hugged her.

Carmela hesitated.

Then held her.

Paolo watched.

He felt no triumph.

No satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

Elise took his hand.

Later that evening, federal agents arrived.

They took Carmela’s statement.

She surrendered her passport.

Victor began cooperating within twenty-four hours.

Renato survived surgery.

He was charged with kidnapping, attempted murder, conspiracy, and dozens of financial crimes.

For the first time in decades, the Ventresca empire had nowhere to hide its secrets.

Three days later, Paolo stood in the garden with Ava.

She was feeding bread to ducks in the pond.

“Daddy?”

“Yeah?”

“Is Grandma bad?”

Paolo looked at her.

The question was harder than anything Renato had asked him.

“Grandma did bad things.”

“Is that the same?”

“No.”

Ava thought about it.

“Can people stop being bad?”

Paolo looked toward the house.

Elise stood at the window.

Talia beside her.

Carmela was gone.

Living temporarily in a court-supervised residence while prosecutors reviewed her cooperation.

“I think people can choose to do better.”

Ava smiled.

“Like superheroes?”

Paolo smiled for the first time in days.

“Not exactly.”

His phone rang.

Marco.

Paolo answered.

“What?”

“We found something in Victor’s files.”

Paolo’s smile disappeared.

“What?”

“A payment made after Sicily.”

“To who?”

Marco hesitated.

“Luca.”

Paolo looked toward the house.

Luca was inside.

Sleeping in the guest room.

Paolo’s voice lowered.

“How much?”

“Five million.”

Paolo felt cold again.

“When?”

“Three days after you were shot.”

Paolo looked through the window.

Luca appeared in the hallway.

May you like

Their eyes met.

And Paolo suddenly wondered whether his oldest friend had been telling the truth at all.
