Chapter 1 - THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

âPaolo⊠they told me you were dead.â
Those seven words hit harder than any bullet ever had.
Paolo Ventresca stopped in the middle of the terrace.
His wife, Elise, stood ten feet away with their four-year-old daughter clutched against her chest.
Ava was crying so hard she could barely breathe.
Behind them, the doors to the Ventresca mansion stood wide open.
And between Paolo and his family stood the two women he had trusted since birth.
His mother.
His sister.
Carmela Ventresca looked like she had seen a corpse rise from its grave.
Talia took one step backward.
Then another.
Paoloâs eyes moved from them to Elise.
âWhat did you say?â
Elise stared at him as though she still wasnât convinced he was real.
âThey told me your plane went down.â
Paoloâs jaw tightened.
âWhat plane?â
âThe one coming back from Sicily.â
âI never got on that plane.â
Eliseâs face collapsed.
For six months she had mourned him.
For six months she had worn black.
For six months she had slept beside an empty pillow while Carmela reminded her that the Ventresca family would âtake care of Ava.â
Paolo turned slowly.
His mother finally found her voice.
âSon, there has been a terrible misunderstanding.â
âDonât.â
One word.
That was enough.
Carmela fell silent.
Talia suddenly ran for the doors.
Paolo caught her wrist before she made it two steps.
âWhere are you going?â
âLet me go!â
âWhat are you afraid Iâm going to find inside?â
Talia swung at him.
Paolo blocked her arm and shoved her away.
She crashed into a patio chair.
Carmela screamed.
âYou donât put your hands on your sister!â
âMy sister just tried to run after my wife told me you buried me without a body.â
Carmela rushed toward Ava.
Elise stepped back.
Paolo moved between them.
âTouch my daughter again and see what happens.â
Carmela froze.
Two of Paoloâs bodyguards, Marco and Darius, stepped onto the terrace.
Paolo didnât take his eyes off his mother.
âClose the doors.â
Marco hesitated.
âBoss?â
âClose them.â
The heavy glass doors locked with a click.
Talia went pale.
Paolo looked at his wife.
âWhat happened while I was gone?â
Elise swallowed.
Her hands were trembling.
âThey took my phone.â
Paoloâs expression changed.
âThey froze every account with my name on it. They fired the staff who spoke to me. Your mother told everyone I was unstable from grief.â
Paolo turned back toward Carmela.
His voice became quiet.
âAnd Ava?â
Eliseâs eyes filled with tears.
âShe tried to take Ava away from me tonight.â
Carmela snapped.
âThat child is a Ventresca!â
âShe is my daughter!â
âShe belongs with her family.â
Paolo took one slow step forward.
âYouâre looking at her family.â
Carmelaâs confidence finally cracked.
Talia whispered, âMom, tell him.â
Paolo heard her.
âTell me what?â
Nobody answered.
He looked between them.
âWhat else did you do?â
Talia shook her head.
Carmela said nothing.
Paolo smiled.
There was no warmth in it.
âMaybe someone else is the one whoâs about to die.â
Carmelaâs face drained of color.
Elise whispered, âPaoloâŠâ
He lifted a hand without turning around.
âNo one is dying tonight.â
He looked directly into his motherâs eyes.
âBut somebodyâs life is about to end exactly as they know it.â
Then Marcoâs phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed immediately.
âBoss.â
âWhat?â
âWe found something downstairs.â
Paolo turned.
âWhat did you find?â
Marco hesitated.
âA death certificate.â
Paolo stared at him.
âWhose?â
May you like
Marco looked straight at Paolo.
âYours.â
