Chapter 8 - The Man With the Lincoln

The Lincoln belonged to Deputy Coroner Stephen Vale.

That was how Mother intended to complete the lie.

Vale had authority to certify deaths under specific circumstances.

He also had gambling debts approaching $300,000.

Mother had paid $75,000 toward them.

The pattern was becoming painfully clear.

She didn’t build loyalty.

She bought desperation.

Vale confessed faster than Halpern.

He had never examined Emily properly.

He had prepared documents listing postpartum complications.

He had arranged the coffin.

He intended to complete the death certificate after the burial.

No hospital investigation.

No questions.

No autopsy.

Clean.

Except Emily had hidden evidence.

And I came home early.

My deployment had ended nine days ahead of schedule.

Mother hadn’t known.

That single change destroyed the entire plan.

But Elena found another problem.

“Daniel.”

She entered the kitchen carrying a file.

“What?”

“Your father.”

I looked up.

“What about him?”

“The trust records.”

She placed them in front of me.

“The withdrawals started before he died.”

“So?”

“So your mother didn’t have authorization then.”

I understood.

“You think she stole from him too.”

“Yes.”

“Maybe more.”

We reopened Emily’s files.

One spreadsheet stretched back ten years.

Payments.

Doctors.

Private nurses.

Consultants.

One name appeared repeatedly during the final year of my father’s life.

Dr. Aaron Halpern.

I stared at Elena.

“No.”

“We don’t know.”

“He was an obstetrician.”

“He also practiced general medicine earlier in his career.”

I called Caleb.

“Was Halpern around when Dad was sick?”

Silence.

Then...

“Yes.”

My father had supposedly died from complications of pancreatic cancer.

Natural.

Expected.

But Emily had apparently asked the same question we were now asking.

Why had an obstetrician been receiving money during his final months?

The investigation expanded.

My father’s archived medical records were requested.

Then investigators found something Emily had highlighted.

His final will had been replaced six weeks before his death.

The original created the trust for me.

The replacement gave Mother control.

But the signature looked wrong.

Exactly like Emily’s false statement.

Someone had been forging signatures for years.

Emily hadn’t discovered a theft.

She had discovered a system.

And that system may have begun with my father.
