Chapter 11 - The Trial Before the Trial

The case became larger than our family.
Halpern lost his medical license pending proceedings.
Vale was removed from office.
Financial investigators froze multiple accounts.
Caleb accepted a cooperation agreement but still faced charges.
Mother refused every offer.
She pleaded not guilty.
Her attorney called the entire case a grieving soldier’s obsession.
Then he made the mistake of attacking Emily.
He described her as unstable.
Manipulative.
Paranoid.
I sat behind prosecutors during the preliminary hearing and listened.
Mother never looked away from me.
Then Rachel testified.
Then Halpern’s transfers were introduced.
Then Emily’s recordings.
The courtroom heard her voice.
Mother’s expression finally changed.
On the recording, Emily said:
“You can keep Daniel’s money.”
Mother replied:
“It was never Daniel’s.”
Emily answered:
“Then why did you forge his father’s will?”
Silence filled the courtroom.
Mother’s recorded voice came next.
“You have no idea what you’re interfering with.”
“I know exactly what I found.”
“You’re carrying a Mercer.”
“I’m carrying my son.”
Then Mother said the sentence that destroyed her defense.
“Not if Daniel never learns what happened here.”
Her attorney closed his eyes.
The judge ordered Mother held without bond.
As deputies approached, she finally looked at me.
“You chose her over your own mother.”
I stood.
“No.”
She waited.
“You made me choose between the truth and you.”
I looked toward the speakers where Emily’s voice had just filled the courtroom.
“You lost.”
Mother was led away.
But the case still had one unanswered question.
Had Emily’s death been intentional?
Or had Mother only intended to sedate her?
Toxicology couldn’t answer motive.
May you like
Caleb could.
And his final testimony would decide everything.
