Chapter 4 - THE THIEF AT THE FUNERAL

Giovanni didn’t think.
He moved.
“Stop him!”
The bodyguards ran toward the exit.
The funeral guests screamed as a man in a black jacket disappeared into the parking lot.
Giovanni followed.
Rain poured outside.
The stranger ran toward a waiting motorcycle.
“HEY!”
The man looked back.
For a moment, Giovanni saw his face.
Young.
Scarred.
Familiar.
Then the motorcycle disappeared into the night.
The bodyguards returned.
Empty-handed.
Giovanni turned around slowly.
“The suitcase…”
Gone.
The only evidence of Elena’s secret.
Gone.
Adrian walked outside.
“You need to leave.”
Giovanni looked at him.
“Excuse me?”
“You heard me.”
Adrian’s voice was serious.
“Maravilla was never just a place.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means people kill for what your wife left behind.”
Giovanni stared.
“What was inside that suitcase?”
Adrian looked toward the dark road.
“Proof.”
“Proof of what?”
Adrian answered quietly.
“That Elena’s death wasn’t an accident.”
The words hit Giovanni.
“What?”
“Your wife wasn’t sick.”
Silence.
“She was poisoned.”
Giovanni felt his chest tighten.
“No.”
Adrian looked directly at him.
“She knew someone wanted her dead.”
“Who?”
Adrian didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Emilio and Clarissa.
Giovanni noticed.
“Why are you looking at my children?”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Because Elena was trying to protect them.”
A cold feeling entered the room.
“From who?”
May you like
Adrian whispered:
“From your family.”
