THE WIFE HE LEFT IN THE FIRE / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2 - The Man Who Came Back —

I got low because nine years of investigating safety violations had taught me what smoke did before flames ever reached you.

That knowledge didn’t make breathing easier.

I pressed my mouth into the neckline of my dress and crawled along the wall, looking for another door, another opening, anything.

The silk caught beneath my knee.

I pulled.

It tore with a sound I would remember long after I forgot the wedding music.

“Help!”

My voice came out thin.

Something heavy struck the wall beside me.

Once.

Twice.

Then a blade punched through plaster.

“Move back!”

I dragged myself away as another blow widened the opening.

A man’s face appeared through the dust.

Miguel Santos. One of the banquet workers. I recognized the crooked name tag on his black vest.

“Can you crawl?”

I tried to answer. Coughed instead.

“Look at me,” he said. “Just this part. We only have to do this part.”

He broke away another section, reached through, and caught my wrist.

My shoulder scraped the opening. Pain flashed white behind my eyes.

Then I was in the pantry.

Miguel pulled a wet cloth over my head and guided me through a back passage. When my legs stopped working, he put my arm across his shoulders.

“Stay with me.”

Outside, cold air hit my face.

I heard engines. Radios. Someone calling for a stretcher.

A paramedic cut at my sleeve.

“Ma’am, what’s your name?”

I grabbed his wrist with what little strength remained.

“Don’t tell my husband I survived.”

He paused.

“Who’s your husband?”

“Captain Mercer.”

His expression changed.

I couldn’t tell whether he believed me before everything went dark.

When I woke, a machine was counting beside my bed.

My shoulder was bandaged. My throat felt scraped raw. Every breath took work.

A nurse leaned over me.

“You’re safe. Don’t try to sit up.”

“Daniel?”

“He hasn’t been given your location.”

I started crying then. Quietly, because crying hurt.

Detective Lena Ortiz arrived before midnight.

She pulled a chair beside the bed and waited while I drank a tiny sip of water.

“The paramedic said you were afraid of your husband.”

I stared at her.

“I’m afraid of what he’ll do if he knows I’m alive.”

She didn’t tell me I was confused. She didn’t mention shock.

“Start wherever you can.”

I told her about the door. His eyes. Vanessa.

Then I told her what I used to do for a living.

By the time I reached the insurance policy, Ortiz had stopped taking notes.

“Do you still have those documents?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

May you like

I swallowed against the pain.

“In the one place Daniel thinks I already cleaned out.”
