Chapter 11 - The Meeting That Didn’t Happen —

Pike never arrived at the meeting.
His attorney called first.
Then his wife.
By late afternoon, investigators found his car behind a closed hardware store.
His phone was on the seat.
For an hour, I was certain he was dead.
Ortiz didn’t let me turn fear into fact.
“We haven’t found him yet.”
“Daniel knows.”
“We don’t know that either.”
“But you think it.”
She didn’t answer.
The hospital suddenly felt too open. Too many elevators. Too many people wearing badges I couldn’t read from my bed.
Security moved me again.
I hated the wheelchair.
I hated that someone had to carry my little bag.
I hated that Daniel could still change the room I slept in without knowing where I was.
At dusk, they found Pike.
He had walked into a grocery store six miles away and asked the cashier to call the police.
He was shaken, bruised, and alive.
A man had met him near the hardware store and warned him about what happened to people who blamed a respected fire captain.
Pike couldn’t give a clear description.
But he could give them something else.
He hadn’t left the voice message on his phone.
He had forwarded it to his wife.
Ortiz played it for me that evening.
Daniel sounded calm.
“Make sure she comes through that service passage when Vanessa calls. I don’t want her wandering toward the front.”
A second message followed.
Pike’s voice.
“You said nobody would get hurt.”
Then Daniel again.
“Nobody will if everybody does what they’re told.”
I listened twice.
My body remembered the hallway before my mind finished hearing the words.
Vanessa calling.
Daniel moving.
Me following.
They hadn’t simply waited for a chance.
They had given me a reason to step through the door.
I asked Ortiz to stop the recording.
She did.
“Is it enough?”
“Enough to move forward. We’re getting the warrants in place.”
I should have felt relieved.
Instead, I thought about Miguel.
About Ben.
About every person Daniel had trained to trust his voice.
That night, an officer brought Ortiz a printed message from my old consulting account.
Someone had tried to reset the password.
The recovery request came from our home.

Daniel was searching for the copies.
And he had finally realized they were missing.
