Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Kept the Receipt

Nora refused to meet at my house.
“Too many gates,” she said.
We met at a diner near the river, with Rachel beside me and Dominic outside.
Nora was thirty-two. She wore a bakery uniform beneath a denim jacket and kept turning a coffee cup she never drank from.
Two years earlier, she had worked at Aether.
Preston had cornered her in a private dining room after she refused to sit on his lap.
When she tried to leave, he grabbed her shirt hard enough to tear the collar.
She slapped his hand away.
Dennis fired her for striking a member.
“Did you report him?” I asked.
“To management.”
“The police?”
She looked at me.
“My rent was late. My mother was sick. Dennis said there were six witnesses who’d swear I attacked Preston.”
Rachel didn’t interrupt.
Nora pulled a folded receipt from her wallet.
A reimbursement slip.
Three hundred dollars for a replacement blouse and “final incident settlement.”
“I never cashed the check.”
“Why keep this?” I asked.
“Because after a while, I started wondering if it had really been as bad as I remembered.”
My chest tightened.
“So I kept something that said it happened.”
Rachel asked whether Nora would speak to the investigator.
Nora stared at the window.
“What happens if I say yes?”
“I can’t promise it will be easy,” Rachel said.
“Will you make me sign something?”
“No.”
Nora nodded slowly.
“Then yes.”
When we left the diner, a man across the street raised his phone.
I stopped.
He lowered it and walked away.
Maybe he was taking a picture of the river.
Maybe he wasn’t.
That was what they had done to me.
Every ordinary movement had become a question.
Back in the car, Dominic handed me water.
“Did she help?”
“She shouldn’t have had to.”
He said nothing.
Rachel called an hour later.
The club had sent a second batch of records.
Nora’s complaint was listed as a uniform dispute.
Three other women appeared in the same folder.
Different incidents.
Same manager.
Same member.
Preston Hale.
Then Rachel found a payment entry from the previous month.
It wasn’t for a blouse.
It was labeled STAFF EVENT EQUIPMENT.

Attached was a receipt for electric clippers.
Purchased on Dennis’s company card.
