Chapter 12 - The Man at the Gate

We let Martin into the front sitting room.
Rachel joined by phone.
Dominic remained standing.
Martin noticed.
“I’m not here to ask you to forgive me.”
“Good,” I said.
He flinched.
Then nodded.
He placed an old handheld radio on the table.
“Our system records dispatch traffic. Local backups. Thirty days.”
“Where’s the recording?” Rachel asked.
“Detective Brooks has a copy. I gave it to her an hour ago.”
“Then why come here?”
He looked at me.
“Because you should hear this from somebody who was there.”
Dennis had ordered him to keep security away from Preston’s table.
He said the event was approved.
He said I had signed a waiver.
Martin had believed him until he heard me scream.
Then he had seen what was happening.
“And you still stayed back,” I said.
“Yes.”
There it was.
No misunderstanding.
No confusion.
A choice.
“My daughter’s tuition is paid through the club,” he said. “My wife’s treatment is on their insurance. Dennis said if I embarrassed Hale again—”
“Again?”
Martin closed his eyes.
“Nora Ellis.”
The room seemed to shrink.
“You knew.”
“I knew enough.”
Dominic moved toward the table.
Martin stiffened.
Dominic only picked up a glass of water and placed it in front of him.
“Finish.”
Graham had called Martin after the police arrived.
He told him to support Dennis’s account.
Later, Dennis sent instructions to describe the assault as a performance.
Martin saved the messages.
He had also saved the dispatch recording.
On it, Mia’s voice asked for help twice.
Then Martin’s own voice said security was standing down.
I listened without moving.
When it ended, Martin stared at his hands.
“I keep hearing her.”
“So do I.”
He looked up.
“I’ll testify.”
“You should.”
After he left, I sat alone for a while.
Dominic found me still facing the empty chair.
“Are you okay?”
“No.”
He sat beside me.
I rested my head against his shoulder.
That evening, Brooks called.
The evidence had been presented to prosecutors.
Charges were being prepared.
But there was a problem.
Mia had received a message from Dennis asking her to collect her final paycheck.

She had gone to the club.
And now her phone was off.
