CHAPTER 3 — The Girl Who Changed A Billionaire’s Heart

Six months later, Whitaker Financial looked different.

Employees noticed it first.

The billionaire who never smiled now carried pictures of two little girls in his office.

The man who stayed late every night now left early for school events.

The man who once measured success in money now measured it in bedtime stories.

Maddie was thriving.

She was back in school.

She laughed more.

She played.

She was finally seven years old again.

One afternoon, Elliot attended her school presentation.

The teacher asked:

“Maddie, what do you want to be when you grow up?”

The room waited.

Everyone expected her to say doctor.

Teacher.

Astronaut.

But Maddie smiled.

“I want to help people.”

The teacher smiled.

“Why?”

Maddie looked at Elliot sitting in the back row.

“Because someone helped me when I thought nobody would.”

Elliot looked down.

Trying to hide his emotion.

After the presentation, Maddie ran to him.

“Mr. Whitaker?”

He smiled.

“What?”

“Do you remember the first thing you asked me?”

Elliot thought for a moment.

“Who told you that you had to work before you were allowed to eat?”

She nodded.

“I remember.”

“And?”

Maddie smiled.

“You were the first person who told me I was allowed to be a kid.”

Elliot knelt down.

The same way he had in that lobby months before.

Only this time, Maddie wasn’t afraid.

She hugged him.

And for the first time in many years…

Elliot Whitaker felt like he had finally found what money could never buy.

A family.

A purpose.

A reason to come home.

Years later, people would still talk about the billionaire who changed Pittsburgh’s business world.

But those who knew the truth told a different story.

They said a seven-year-old girl walked into his company asking for a job…

And somehow…

May you like

She became the person who saved him.
