CHAPTER 2 — The Promise Elliot Never Forgot

Twenty-eight years earlier, Elliot Whitaker was not a billionaire.
He was just a young man trying to build his first company.
And someone believed in him.
Her name was Sarah Bennett.
Sarah was the daughter of his first business partner.
When Elliot had nothing, Sarah’s father gave him a chance.
But after a tragic accident, Sarah disappeared from his life.
Elliot searched.
He called.
He tried to find her.
But she was gone.
Until now.
The little girl sitting across from him was Sarah’s daughter.
His hands trembled slightly as he read the note again.
“Your mother knew me?”
Maddie nodded.
“She said you were the only person who kept promises.”
Elliot closed his eyes.
Because he had made one promise years ago.
A promise he thought he would never need to fulfill.
He promised Sarah’s father:
“If Sarah ever needs help, I’ll be there.”
And now Sarah needed him.
But years had passed.
Too many years.
That evening, Elliot visited Maddie’s apartment.
The reality broke his heart.
A small room.
Broken heater.
Empty refrigerator.
A sick woman lying in bed.
“Maddie…”
Sarah opened her eyes.
For a moment, she looked confused.
Then tears filled her eyes.
“Elliot?”
He nodded.
“I found your daughter.”
Sarah looked toward Maddie.
“She went to your office?”
Elliot smiled sadly.
“She asked me for a job.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize.”
“I failed her.”
“No.”
Elliot’s voice became firm.
“You survived for her.”
Sarah started crying.
“I wanted to give her more.”
“You gave her something money can’t buy.”
“What?”
“A heart that refuses to give up.”
Days later, Sarah’s health improved.
Rosie gained weight.
Maddie finally slept through the night.
But Elliot discovered something unexpected.
Maddie didn’t just need food.
She needed a childhood.
So he made a choice.
He became her guardian.
Not because he felt sorry for her.
Because he wanted to.
