Chapter 6 - What Survived

Lena’s phone had backed up to an account she could still access.
Ruiz arranged for her to open it on a hospital computer in a private room.
I stayed outside until they called me in.
On the screen was a photograph of a red notebook.
The handwriting was cramped.
Tuesday, 2:10.
Noah hard to wake after Margaret’s shift.
Asked what he was given.
She said milk.
Another page.
Friday.
Heard crying behind pantry door.
Margaret said supplies fell and she was cleaning.
Wouldn’t let me in.
Then a later entry.
Found Nico’s sock under pantry shelf.
Both boys shaking when she handed them back.
I gripped the back of a chair.
“Why didn’t you break the door down?”
Lena turned toward me.
“I did open it.
The first time I knew they were inside, I got them out.”
“When?”
“Five days ago.”
“And afterward?”
“She said it had been a minute.
She said I was hysterical.
Then I found the bracelet.”
Her voice cracked.
“I kept them with me whenever I could.
I stayed after my shift.
I slept in the nursery chair.
I thought if I could just reach you—”
She stopped.
Ruiz spoke gently.
“You also sent an email to the household address?”
“Three.
And one directly to his business office.”
My head came up.
“My office?”
“The address on your company website.”
Ruiz opened the saved message.
The subject line read: URGENT CONCERN ABOUT NICO AND NOAH.
It had been sent four days earlier.
A reply beneath it said the message had been forwarded to household management.
Margaret.
Lena had gone around her.
The system had sent her straight back.
I stepped into the hallway and called my assistant.
“Find an email from Lena.
About the boys.
Four days ago.”
She began explaining how personal matters were routed.
“Find it.”
When she called back, her voice was different.
“I’m so sorry.”
I pressed my forehead against the wall.
Inside the room, Ruiz was asking Lena about another file.
An audio recording.
It lasted forty-seven seconds.
“Do you want to hear it?” Ruiz asked me.
May you like
I looked through the glass at my sons.
Then I nodded.
