Chapter 11 - The File She Built

The folder contained seven reports.
All supposedly written during Lena’s seven weeks in the house.
Carelessness.
Disrespect.
Unapproved absences.
Medication concerns.
Every page had a place for my signature.
Three bore it.
I stared at the first one.
“I didn’t sign this.”
Harris laid another document beside it.
A routine maintenance approval.
The signatures were identical.
Not similar.
Identical, down to a small break where my pen had skipped.
David examined the copies.
“We’ll let the investigators handle the analysis,” he said.
“Don’t write on anything.”
The reports claimed I had been warned about Lena repeatedly.
One said she had been caught giving the twins medicine without permission.
The date was the same day she had emailed my business office.
Margaret hadn’t merely hidden the complaint.
She had prepared an answer for it.
I felt sick.
“How many people saw these?”
Harris shook his head.
“We don’t know.”
By afternoon, Ruiz had the folder.
By evening, the household bookkeeper called.
Her voice shook.
“Margaret asked me to put those in your personnel file.”
“When?”
“Yesterday morning.”
Before Margaret warned me about Lena.
Before I found the scratches.
She had been laying the track beneath my feet, guiding me toward the person she wanted blamed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
The bookkeeper began crying.
And I heard myself.
The same question.
Again and again.
Asked of people who had watched me choose convenience for years.
I took a breath.
“Tell Detective Ruiz exactly what happened.
You won’t be punished for speaking to her.”
After the call, I found Lena folding tiny shirts.
“You don’t have to do that.”
“I know.”
She kept folding.
“I saw the reports.”
Her hands stopped.
“How?”
“Margaret showed me one.
She said you’d signed it.”
I looked at the shirts between us.
“You thought I knew.”
“For a while.”
“And you stayed?”
“For them.”
Down the hall, Noah began crying.
Lena stood automatically.
This time I stood with her.
Before we reached the nursery, my phone rang.
Ruiz’s voice was quiet.

“We found a purchase record.
The lock was bought earlier than you remember.”
