Chapter 9 - Locker 314

Adrian ran toward the tunnel.

The explosion lifted him off his feet.

Metal fragments tore through the station wall.

Smoke filled the underground corridor.

Police officers dragged Adrian away from the fire.

Nathan escaped through a maintenance exit.

Locker 314 was destroyed.

But investigators recovered one damaged steel case from behind the wall.

The case had been protected by fireproof insulation.

Inside were paper files, photographs, and audio recordings.

Adrian sat in an ambulance while paramedics treated his shoulder.

Detective Brooks opened the first file.

It contained financial documents signed by Adrian’s late father, Robert Vale.

Millions had been transferred into the illegal medical program.

Adrian stared at the signature.

“It could be forged.”

Brooks said nothing.

The next document contained Robert Vale’s handwritten notes.

The writing was unmistakable.

Subjects without family connections remain the safest choice.

Adrian turned away.

His father had built the Vale empire.

Adrian had spent his life trying to honor him.

Now every memory felt contaminated.

Brooks played one of the recovered audio recordings.

Julian’s voice filled the ambulance.

“I know what you did, Father.”

Robert answered.

“You know nothing about survival.”

“You experimented on people.”

“We funded research.”

“You poisoned them.”

“Progress always has a cost.”

Adrian pressed his fist against his mouth.

The recording continued.

Julian threatened to go to federal authorities.

Robert warned him that the company would collapse.

Then Celeste’s voice entered the room.

She told Julian that she could help him expose everything.

The recording ended.

Brooks looked at Adrian.

“She lured him to the hospital roof.”

Adrian nodded slowly.

“My father ordered his murder.”

“We don’t know that yet.”

“I do.”

Adrian left the ambulance and walked toward the station.

Reporters had gathered outside.

News of Celeste’s arrest had already spread across the city.

Adrian’s board of directors issued a statement denying knowledge of illegal activity.

His company’s stock began to collapse before the market even opened.

At the hospital, Evelyn watched the news from her bed.

Mia sat beside Noah’s crib.

“They’re blaming Adrian.”

Evelyn nodded.

“People protect power until it becomes dangerous to stand near it.”

“Will he lose everything?”

“Maybe.”

Mia looked at Noah.

“Then what happens to us?”

Evelyn did not answer.

Adrian arrived one hour later.

His arm was in a sling.

Mia stood.

“You promised you would come back.”

“I did.”

“You got shot.”

“That wasn’t part of the plan.”

Mia almost smiled.

Then Evelyn showed Adrian the news.

Police had announced an investigation into Vale Development.

Several victims from the old hospital were still alive.

They were preparing lawsuits.

Adrian sat beside Evelyn.

“My father funded it.”

Evelyn reached for his hand.

“You didn’t know.”

“My company benefited from it.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I should have.”

“No one sees every secret inside their own family.”

Mia looked toward the doorway.

A nurse had entered.

She carried a tray of medicine.

Mia stared at her shoes.

They were men’s shoes.

Too large for the nurse’s uniform.

Mia looked at the nurse’s hands.

A familiar silver ring was on one finger.

She had seen it at the gala basement.

The attacker had worn the same ring.

Mia jumped up.

“Don’t touch Noah!”

The disguised attacker pulled a syringe from the tray.

Evelyn screamed.

Adrian lunged toward him.

The man injected the syringe into Adrian’s injured shoulder.

Adrian collapsed.

The attacker grabbed Noah’s crib.

Mia bit his wrist.

He struck her and pushed the crib into the hallway.

Security alarms began ringing.

The attacker ran toward the elevator with Noah.

Evelyn crawled from the bed.

“Mia, stop him!”

Mia chased the crib toward the closing elevator doors.

She threw herself forward.

The doors closed with Mia and Noah inside.

The attacker smiled down at her.

“You should have stayed in the trash where I found you.”

Mia stared at him.

Then she recognized his face beneath the disguise.

He was not a stranger.

May you like

He was her father.
