Chapter 1 - The Name on the Bracelet

The man in the navy suit stared at the bruises covering the baby’s tiny arm.

His name was Adrian Vale.

He was one of the richest real estate developers in Chicago.

He had faced hostile investors, federal investigations, and enemies who had tried to destroy his company.

But nothing had ever frightened him like the infant sleeping in front of him.

Adrian slowly looked at the woman in the dark red gown.

His wife, Celeste, stood completely still.

The panic in her eyes lasted only a second.

Then her face hardened.

“This is ridiculous.”

Celeste pointed toward the ballroom doors.

“Security should have removed that filthy child the moment she entered.”

The little girl tightened her grip around the baby.

“My name is Mia.”

Her voice was calm.

“And I’m not leaving without him knowing what you did.”

Adrian looked back at the baby.

A thin hospital bracelet was wrapped around the infant’s wrist.

Most of the writing had faded.

One name remained visible.

VALE, MALE INFANT.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Celeste lunged forward.

She grabbed the bracelet and tried to rip it away.

Mia turned her body and shielded the baby.

“Don’t touch him!”

The guests gasped.

Adrian caught Celeste’s wrist before she could reach the child again.

“Why does that bracelet have my name on it?”

Celeste’s lips parted.

No answer came out.

Adrian’s fingers tightened around her wrist.

“I asked you a question.”

Celeste glanced at the crowd.

Dozens of phones were already recording.

Board members watched from beside the stage.

Reporters who had been invited to cover the charity gala were moving closer.

Celeste understood that one wrong sentence could destroy everything.

So she smiled.

It was a desperate, trembling smile.

“Adrian, people are watching.”

“Then tell them the truth.”

“I don’t know that baby.”

Mia stared at her.

“You knew him when you carried him behind the old St. Matthew’s clinic.”

Celeste’s smile disappeared.

Mia continued.

“You were wearing a red coat.”

“You had blood on one sleeve.”

“And you kept saying that your husband could never find out.”

Adrian slowly released Celeste’s wrist.

His face had gone completely pale.

Celeste stepped backward.

“That child is confused.”

Mia reached into the torn pocket of her coat.

She pulled out a silver button.

A small letter C had been engraved into its center.

“I found this beside the dumpster.”

Celeste instinctively touched the front of her gown.

One decorative silver button was missing from her sleeve.

Every guest saw it.

Adrian saw it too.

Celeste looked down.

For the first time, she appeared genuinely afraid.

Adrian took the button from Mia.

He examined it carefully.

Then he looked at his wife.

“Where were you three nights ago?”

Celeste swallowed.

“At home.”

“No, you weren’t.”

A new voice came from the crowd.

Adrian’s elderly housekeeper, Rosa Martinez, stepped forward.

Rosa had worked for the Vale family for more than twenty years.

Her hands were shaking.

“Mrs. Vale left the mansion shortly after midnight.”

Celeste spun toward her.

“You ungrateful liar!”

Rosa flinched.

But she did not step back.

“She returned at four in the morning.”

“Her coat was torn.”

“And there was something dark on the sleeve.”

Celeste’s face twisted with rage.

“You’re fired.”

Adrian looked at Rosa.

“No, she isn’t.”

Then he turned toward the head of security.

“Lock every exit.”

The ballroom erupted in frightened whispers.

Celeste rushed toward Adrian.

“You cannot imprison two hundred guests because of a street girl’s fantasy.”

Adrian ignored her.

He took out his phone.

“I’m calling the police.”

Celeste’s expression changed instantly.

She grabbed his arm.

“Adrian, wait.”

He looked down at her hand.

“Why?”

Celeste lowered her voice.

“Because this is more complicated than you understand.”

Adrian stared at her.

“Is that baby mine?”

The entire ballroom went silent again.

Celeste’s eyes filled with tears.

But before she could answer, the lights suddenly went out.

A woman screamed.

Glass shattered somewhere near the stage.

Mia felt someone seize the back of her coat.

The baby woke and began to cry.

“Mister Adrian!”

Adrian moved toward her voice.

Then a heavy object struck him from behind.

He collapsed onto the carpet.

When the emergency lights flickered on seconds later, Mia was gone.

May you like

And so was the baby.
