Chapter 6 - The Video She Thought Would Save Her

In the video, Noah sat with his knees against his chest.

Claire’s voice came from behind the phone.

“Tell Daddy why you’re in here.”

He shook his head.

“Tell him.”

“I spilled it.”

“And what happens when we don’t listen?”

“I stay.”

“Until?”

“Till I’m good.”

My ears rang.

Claire stopped the video.

“See? He understood the rule.”

I looked at her phone.

“Send me that.”

She frowned.

“No. You’ll twist it.”

“You recorded yourself making him say that.”

“It was juice, Daniel. All over an expensive rug.”

“Then you clean the rug.”

“You always take his side.”

“He’s a child.”

“And I was supposed to spend my wedding day watching him cling to you?”

There it was.

No accident. No joke. No exhaustion.

Resentment, stripped clean of every excuse.

Vivian spoke sharply.

“Claire. Stop talking.”

Claire’s eyes flicked toward her mother.

I took my phone out and called Rachel.

“How is he?”

“He’s in clean pajamas,” she said. “He’s asking when you’re coming.”

“I’m leaving now.”

I picked up Noah’s bag.

Claire stepped in front of the door.

“If you walk out, don’t expect me to sit quietly while your family destroys my reputation.”

“Move.”

“Daniel—”

“Move away from the door.”

Something in my voice made Vivian take her daughter’s elbow.

They stepped aside.

In the car, I called Ben and asked him to preserve the original footage. Then I called the local police nonemergency line and described what had happened.

I didn’t know what would happen next.

I only knew I was finished handling it as a private disagreement.

At Rachel’s, Noah was curled on the couch, wide awake.

When he saw Bear, he reached with both hands.

“She said he was gone forever.”

I knelt beside him.

“I found him.”

His face folded.

For the first time that night, he cried.

I held him while he shook, while Rachel sat beside us, while the clock moved past midnight.

Then he pulled back.

“Can we get Mommy too?”

I handed him the photograph.

His little thumb traced the crack.

“She said you wanted her gone.”
