Chapter 4 - THE MAN WHO NEVER ASKED FOR HELP

Claire Bennett hated hospitals.

Not because of the smell.

Not because of the endless white walls.

Not even because of the machines that beeped beside every bed.

She hated hospitals because they reminded her how fragile people really were.

And Adrian Mercer?

Adrian Mercer was supposed to be untouchable.

But now he was standing outside Lily’s hospital room, staring through the glass window like a man who had forgotten how to breathe.

Claire watched him from the hallway.

For the last three hours, she had seen a side of him nobody in Boston knew existed.

Not the businessman.

Not the feared man.

Not the billionaire.

A father.

A terrified father.

Lily had collapsed during breakfast.

One minute she was laughing.

The next, she was pale, shaking, and unable to stand.

The doctors said it was likely from exhaustion, stress, and the fever she had been fighting.

But Adrian didn’t hear any of that.

All he heard was:

Your daughter is sick.

Claire had never seen a man become so still.

When the doctor spoke, Adrian didn’t interrupt.

When the nurses moved around him, he stepped aside.

When people told him everything would be okay, he didn't believe them.

Because men like Adrian Mercer didn't trust promises.

They trusted results.

And right now...

he had no control.

Claire walked closer.

"Mr. Mercer."

He didn't look at her.

"She hates hospitals."

Claire looked through the glass.

"I know."

"How?"

"Because she told me."

Adrian finally turned.

"When?"

"Last week."

Claire folded her arms.

"She said hospitals are where people go when they don't come home."

The words hit him.

Hard.

Because Lily wasn't talking about hospitals.

She was talking about her mother.

Rebecca.

Adrian looked away.

For a moment, Claire saw the pain he tried so hard to hide.

Then it disappeared.

The wall came back.

"She shouldn't be afraid."

Claire gave him a sad smile.

"She's six years old, Adrian."

The use of his first name surprised both of them.

Claire immediately realized what she had done.

"I'm sorry."

But Adrian didn't correct her.

Instead, he asked:

"How do you do that?"

"Do what?"

"Talk to her."

Claire looked confused.

"You mean?"

"Everyone comes in trying to fix her."

His voice became quieter.

"Doctors. Specialists. Therapists."

A pause.

"They all see a problem."

Claire looked at Lily.

"I see a little girl who misses her mom."

Adrian said nothing.

Because that was exactly what he had forgotten.

Not because he didn't love Lily.

Because he loved her so much that every tear felt like a failure.

"I failed her," he whispered.

Claire stared at him.

"No."

"Claire—"

"No."

Her voice was stronger.

"You didn't fail her."

Adrian looked at her.

"You lost your wife. You lost the life you thought you would have. And then you had to raise a child who was hurting while pretending you weren't hurting too."

Silence.

"You are not failing her."

For several seconds, Adrian didn't move.

Then his jaw tightened.

"You don't know anything about me."

Claire stepped closer.

"You're right."

She looked directly into his eyes.

"But I know a father who sat beside his daughter's bed all night."

A pause.

"I know a man who canceled a meeting because his daughter finally slept."

Another pause.

"And I know someone who is terrified because he loves her."

Adrian looked away.

Because she was right.

And he hated that.

Nobody spoke to him like this.

Nobody challenged him.

Nobody saw through him.

Except her.

The door opened.

The doctor stepped out.

"Mr. Mercer?"

Adrian immediately turned.

"How is she?"

"Stable."

The single word changed the air.

Claire saw his shoulders relax slightly.

"Can I see her?"

"In a few minutes."

Adrian nodded.

Then the doctor looked at Claire.

"She keeps asking for you."

Claire froze.

Adrian noticed.

"Go."

She looked at him.

"Are you sure?"

His expression softened.

"She needs you."

Claire entered the room.

And Adrian stayed outside.

Watching.

For the first time in years...

he wasn't angry that someone else could comfort his daughter.

He was grateful.

But what Adrian didn't know...

was that while he stood in that hospital hallway...

someone was inside his company.

Someone who had access to his files.

Someone who knew exactly where Claire and Lily were.

And that person had just opened a folder.

May you like

A folder labeled:

MERCER'S WEAKNESS.
