Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT THE MOST DANGEROUS MAN IN BOSTON HELD HER HAND

The first thing Claire Bennett saw when she opened her eyes was the man who could destroy her life.

Adrian Mercer.

The most feared man in Boston.

Sitting three feet away.

Holding her hand.

Claire stopped breathing.

For one terrifying second, she wondered if she was still dreaming.

Then she felt the small weight against her chest.

Lily.

Six years old.

The daughter of Adrian Mercer.

The little girl who hadn't slept peacefully in months.

Lily was curled against Claire like she was afraid the world would take her away if she let go. Her tiny fingers were twisted tightly into Claire's cardigan.

And Claire's right hand...

was inside Adrian Mercer's.

His fingers were wrapped around hers.

Not aggressively.

Not possessively.

Almost gently.

That was what scared her.

Because Adrian Mercer was not a gentle man.

Everyone in Boston knew his name.

Some respected him.

Some feared him.

Some hated him.

But nobody ignored him.

Claire had heard the stories before she accepted the nanny job.

The Mercer family had been powerful for generations.

Old money.

Old connections.

Old enemies.

People said Adrian Mercer didn't need to raise his voice because everyone already knew what happened when he got angry.

But right now...

he wasn't looking like the monster everyone described.

He was looking at his daughter.

Like she was the only thing in the world that mattered.

"Mr. Mercer..." Claire whispered.

His eyes lifted.

Dark.

Cold.

Impossible to read.

The kind of eyes that made people nervous.

Claire immediately tried to pull her hand away.

Adrian released her.

Slowly.

Carefully.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Because for a strange second...

she missed the warmth.

"I apologize," Claire said quickly.

Her cheeks burned.

"I didn't mean to fall asleep."

Adrian said nothing.

Claire looked around the bedroom.

The oversized chair.

The blanket covering Lily.

The morning snow outside the giant windows.

Then reality hit her.

She had broken every rule.

Employees didn't sleep in family bedrooms.

Employees didn't hold their employer's child all night.

Employees definitely didn't wake up holding their employer's hand.

"I understand if you want me to leave," she said quietly.

Adrian looked back at Lily.

"My daughter slept for seven hours."

Claire blinked.

"What?"

"Seven hours."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"She hasn't slept seven hours straight since her mother died."

The room became silent.

Claire looked down at Lily.

The little girl looked peaceful.

Almost happy.

A year ago, Rebecca Mercer had died after a long illness.

Claire never met her.

But Rebecca was everywhere in that house.

Her pictures.

Her perfume.

Her favorite songs.

Her memories.

Lily had never recovered.

Doctors tried.

Therapists tried.

Everyone tried.

But Lily pushed everyone away.

Except Claire.

Because Claire never tried to fix her.

She just stayed.

When Lily cried, Claire listened.

When Lily was angry, Claire didn't punish her.

When Lily asked if her mother would come back, Claire didn't lie.

She simply held her.

Last night had been the worst.

The fever.

The nightmares.

The crying.

"Mommy..."

That one word had broken Claire's heart.

So she held Lily.

She told her a story.

She sang Rebecca's old lullaby.

And somehow...

the little girl finally slept.

Claire looked at Adrian.

"I only wanted to help her."

"I know."

Two simple words.

But coming from Adrian Mercer...

they felt different.

"You learned my wife's song."

Claire looked away.

"Lily asked me."

"You listened to the recording?"

Claire gave a small embarrassed smile.

"About forty times."

For the first time, something changed in Adrian's expression.

Almost a smile.

Almost.

"My wife sang better."

Claire stared at him.

"That's a little rude."

Silence.

Then Adrian Mercer smiled.

Barely.

But he smiled.

And Claire forgot how dangerous he was.

Because for one second...

he wasn't a billionaire.

He wasn't a powerful businessman.

He was just a tired father.

A broken man trying to protect his daughter.

Then Lily moved.

Her eyes opened slowly.

"Claire?"

"I'm here, sweetheart."

The little girl's face relaxed immediately.

Then she noticed Adrian.

"Daddy?"

Adrian stepped closer.

"Morning, bug."

Lily stared at him.

"You came home."

"I always come home."

The words were simple.

But Claire saw the fear in Lily's eyes.

"Promise?"

Adrian didn't hesitate.

"I promise."

Claire looked away.

Because promises were dangerous.

Especially to children who had already lost someone.

A few minutes later, Lily fell asleep again.

Adrian stood.

Claire expected him to leave.

Instead, he said:

"Breakfast will be brought upstairs."

"That's not necessary."

"It wasn't a question."

Claire almost smiled.

"There he is."

Adrian stopped.

"What?"

She immediately regretted speaking.

"The man everyone warned me about."

Adrian turned.

"And before?"

Claire looked at Lily.

"Before now?"

She smiled softly.

"You were just Lily's dad."

The silence that followed felt heavy.

Adrian stared at her.

Then he walked to the door.

His hand touched the handle.

But he stopped.

"My wife was the only person who ever spoke to me like that."

Claire's expression changed.

"I'm sorry."

Adrian looked over his shoulder.

"I didn't say I disliked it."

Then he left.

Claire sat there, confused.

Because something had just changed.

She didn't know what.

But she felt it.

Downstairs, Adrian entered his private office.

His security chief, Marcus Hale, was waiting.

"You were supposed to sleep," Marcus said.

Adrian ignored him.

"Cancel my nine o'clock."

Marcus frowned.

"You never cancel meetings."

"I just did."

"Why?"

Adrian looked toward the bedroom above.

"My daughter slept."

Marcus froze.

"Really?"

"Seven hours."

A slow understanding appeared on Marcus's face.

"The nanny."

Adrian said nothing.

Marcus knew that silence meant yes.

"Careful," Marcus said.

Adrian looked at him.

"About what?"

"About trusting someone."

Before Adrian could answer...

his phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

Three words.

Pretty little family.

Below it was a photograph.

Taken from outside the mansion gates.

Claire and Lily.

Walking in the snow.

Adrian's expression changed instantly.

The warmth disappeared.

The dangerous man returned.

Marcus looked at the screen.

"Who took that?"

Adrian stared at the picture.

Then he said quietly:

"Find them."

Marcus nodded.

"And Adrian?"

"What?"

His voice dropped.

"Whoever did this..."

A pause.

"They know exactly where to hurt you."

Adrian looked upstairs.

At his daughter.

At Claire.

And for the first time in a long time...

May you like

Adrian Mercer felt something he hated.

Fear.
