THE NAME SHE NEVER TOLD HIM / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

Elena turned the screen toward Gabriel.

“Tell me he’s lying.”

Her father looked at the message.

Then away.

The silence landed harder than Julian’s words.

“How much?”

“Elena—”

“How much?”

“Two million dollars.”

She let go of his hand.

For a moment, the room seemed to tilt.

“When?”

“Four months ago.”

Four months ago, Julian had brought her breakfast in bed.

He had kissed her forehead and said things were finally looking up.

“What did he sell you?”

“A story.”

Gabriel rubbed a hand across his face.

“He said his business was in trouble. He said you were terrified of losing the house. That you wouldn’t ask me because you thought I’d use the money to control you.”

“And you believed him?”

“I believed you might think that.”

It was an honest answer.

She hated it anyway.

“He said you needed peace during the pregnancy. I paid through my attorney. I required the loan to be kept separate from your trust.”

“Did you call me?”

“He said you would refuse.”

“So you let my husband speak for me.”

Gabriel lowered his head.

“Yes.”

Elena stared at the monitor.

For three years, one man had controlled her by taking things away.

Another had tried protecting her without asking what she needed.

The difference mattered.

The damage mattered too.

“What did you get in return?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why does Julian think you owe him silence?”

Gabriel did not answer quickly enough.

Before she could press him, a woman with silver-rimmed glasses knocked on the open door.

“Nora Bennett. Your father called my office.”

Elena pointed to the chair.

“You work for me?”

“If you retain me, yes.”

“Even if I disagree with him?”

“Especially then.”

For the first time that afternoon, Elena felt something like solid ground.

Nora asked permission to review her accounts.

Elena gave it.

Within an hour, the attorney’s expression changed.

“There’s an application here to refinance the estate.”

Elena frowned.

“The house is in a trust my mother created.”

“Yes. And this document claims you authorized Julian to act for you.”

“I didn’t.”

Nora turned the tablet around.

At the bottom of the page was Elena’s signature.

Perfectly formed.

Dated yesterday.

Beneath it sat a second page naming Julian as the person authorized to make broad financial decisions on her behalf.

Elena looked up.

“He wasn’t just trying to keep me at the house.”

May you like

“No,” Nora said.

“He was trying to take it before you left.”
