THE NAME SHE NEVER TOLD HIM / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - THE SMALLest FIGHTER

Elena had imagined labor beginning in the nursery.

A packed bag.

A nervous laugh.

Someone forgetting the car keys.

Instead, it began under bright hospital lights while Nora silenced a phone full of legal updates.

Dr. Shah explained what was happening.

Her blood pressure was dangerously high. The baby was showing signs that made waiting riskier.

They needed to deliver.

Elena listened.

Asked questions.

Signed her own consent.

When the doctor left to prepare, fear rushed into the space she had occupied.

“It’s too early.”

Gabriel stood beside the bed.

“I know.”

“What if she can’t breathe?”

“The team will help her.”

“What if—”

His voice shook.

“I don’t have a promise big enough for this.”

Elena looked at him.

That honest helplessness comforted her more than certainty would have.

Tessa took her other hand.

“You don’t have to be brave every second.”

“I’m so tired.”

“Then borrow us.”

The next hour broke into pieces.

A blue curtain.

A calm voice near her head.

Pressure.

Someone asking whether she felt nauseated.

Then a tiny sound.

Thin.

Angry.

Alive.

Elena started crying.

“Is that her?”

“That’s your daughter,” someone said.

She saw a small face for a moment before the neonatal team moved the baby to the warmer.

Dark hair.

A wrinkled forehead.

One fierce little fist.

“What’s her name?” a nurse asked.

Elena had kept it secret for months.

“Lily.”

Her mother’s favorite flower.

When Elena woke in recovery, Gabriel sat beside her with a photograph.

Lily lay in an incubator, surrounded by wires that made her look impossibly small.

“She’s getting help breathing,” he said. “They say she’s working hard.”

Elena touched the screen.

“Tell her I’m coming.”

“You’ll tell her yourself.”

Hours later, a nurse helped wheel Elena to the neonatal unit.

She placed one finger through the incubator opening.

Lily’s hand curled around it.

The entire world narrowed to that grip.

No estate.

No money.

No husband.

Just a tiny person holding on.

Behind her, Nora appeared at the doorway.

Her expression was wrong.

Elena’s body went cold.

“What?”

“Lily is fine.”

“Then say it.”

“Julian came to the hospital.”

Gabriel stood.

Security voices carried faintly from the corridor.

Julian had brought flowers.

And a camera crew.

Outside the locked neonatal unit, he was telling a reporter that his wife’s family was keeping him from his newborn daughter.
