CHAPTER 3 — THE MAN WHO STOOD AGAIN

Emma returned to Sebastian’s mansion the next morning.
But this time, she wasn’t there as a healer.
She was there for answers.
She placed the photograph on his desk.
Sebastian looked at it.
And for the first time…
he looked afraid.
"Where did you get this?"
"My apartment."
Silence.
"Tell me the truth."
Sebastian closed his eyes.
After twenty years, the secret finally came back.
"Your father was my closest friend."
Emma froze.
"He worked with you?"
"No."
Sebastian looked at her.
"He protected me."
Then the truth came out.
Twenty years earlier, Sebastian’s father had been involved in dangerous business.
Emma’s father discovered someone inside the organization was planning a betrayal.
He tried to warn Sebastian.
But before he could reveal the name…
the bombing happened.
Sebastian survived.
Emma’s father disappeared.
Everyone believed he died.
But Sebastian had spent years searching for him.
"I thought I lost both of you that night."
Emma’s anger softened.
"But you never told me."
"Because I thought staying away from you would keep you safe."
She looked at his wheelchair.
"You sacrificed your life for a lie."
"No."
Sebastian looked toward his legs.
"I sacrificed my life because I failed to protect the people I loved."
Then the enemy finally appeared.
The man behind everything.
Victor Moretti.
Sebastian’s former partner.
The man who had spent twenty years waiting for Sebastian to die.
Victor attacked the mansion.
Gunshots echoed through the halls.
Guards fell.
Chaos exploded.
Emma grabbed Oliver’s hand when Sebastian suddenly rolled his wheelchair forward.
But something was different.
He wasn’t moving like a helpless man.
He was moving like someone who had been preparing for this moment his entire life.
Then Victor entered the room.
"You really believed some woman could fix you?"
Sebastian looked at him calmly.
"No."
He placed both hands on the wheelchair.
"I believed I could fix myself."
Slowly…
painfully…
Sebastian pushed himself upward.
Everyone froze.
His legs shook.
His body fought against twenty years of weakness.
But he stood.
Not perfectly.
Not easily.
But he stood.
Victor stepped backward.
Impossible.
Sebastian looked him directly in the eyes.
"For twenty years, you thought you broke me."
A small smile appeared.
"You only made me stronger."
The final confrontation ended with Victor arrested and his entire empire exposed.
Months later, Chicago saw a different Sebastian Lombardi.
Not a man sitting behind walls.
A man walking.
Slowly.
One step at a time.
He still carried the scars.
He still carried the memories.
But he was no longer trapped.
Emma continued treating patients.
Her small clinic grew into one of the most respected rehabilitation centers in the city.
And Oliver?
Oliver finally had the life his mother always wanted for him.
One evening, Sebastian stood outside Emma’s clinic.
Walking.
Without assistance.
Without fear.
Emma smiled.
"I never thought I'd see this."
Sebastian looked down at his feet.
"Neither did I."
Then he looked at her.
"You gave me back my legs."
Emma shook her head.
"No."
She smiled.
"You fought for them."
And for the first time in twenty years…
Sebastian Lombardi walked into the future.
May you like
Not as Chicago's most feared man.
But as a man who finally learned how to live.
