Chapter 1: The Woman Wearing My Robe

Chapter 1: The Woman Wearing My Robe

The morning I discovered my husband wanted me gone, the first thing I saw was not the divorce papers.

It was Vanessa Crowley wearing my silk robe.

The pale blue robe my sister gave me for my fortieth birthday.

She stood in my kitchen like she had lived there for years, drinking coffee from my favorite mug while my mother-in-law packed my clothes into black trash bags.

My husband Dean stood beside the marble island with a calm expression.

Too calm.

Because only hours earlier, I had saved his $2.4 million company.

He had held my hand.

He had kissed my forehead.

He had told me I was the only person who believed in him.

Now he was sliding divorce papers toward me.

“Sign them, Natalie,” he said.

I looked at the documents.

Then at Vanessa.

Then at the bags filled with my life.

And for the first time in thirteen years…

I realized I had never truly known the man I married.

But Dean made one mistake.

He thought my silence meant I was defeated.

He had no idea I was already calculating every move.
