Chapter 2: The Box That Changed Everything

The gender reveal continued, but the mood had changed.
The guests watched quietly as Mark and Elena stood beside Lily.
This time, they didn’t stand apart.
They stood together.
Before opening the box, Mark looked at Lily.
“Would you like to do this with us?”
Lily looked surprised.
“Me?”
Mark smiled.
“Of course.”
“You are not being replaced.”
“You are becoming a big sister.”
For the first time that day, Lily smiled.
A real smile.
She slowly placed her hand on the ribbon beside her father.
Together, they opened the box.
A cloud of pink balloons floated into the sky.
The crowd cheered.
“It’s a girl!”
Everyone celebrated.
But Elena wasn’t looking at the balloons.
She was looking at Lily.
Her daughter was staring at the pink balloons with a completely different expression.
Not sadness.
Not fear.
Wonder.
“A little sister,” Lily whispered.
Elena nodded.
“Yes.”
Lily touched her mother’s belly carefully.
“Will she know that I love her?”
Elena smiled through tears.
“She will know because you’ll be the first person who teaches her what love feels like.”
That night, after the guests left, Lily sat beside her mother in the nursery.
The room was filled with tiny clothes, stuffed animals, and baby decorations.
Lily held a small pink blanket.
“I thought when she came… I would become invisible.”
Elena sat beside her.
“You know what I was afraid of before you were born?”
Lily looked curious.
“What?”
“I was afraid I wouldn’t know how to be a mother.”
Lily smiled slightly.
“But you were a good mom.”
Elena kissed her forehead.
“Because you taught me.”
A small silence filled the room.
Then Lily placed the blanket inside the crib.
“I want to teach her everything.”
Elena smiled.
“I think she’s already lucky to have you.”
But neither of them noticed something important.
Standing outside the nursery door…
Mark was listening.
And he realized something.
His daughter didn’t need expensive gifts.
May you like
She didn’t need a perfect family.
She only needed to know she still belonged.
