Chapter 15 - THE LAST THORN

The hospital confirmed Daniel had never arrived.

The ambulance carrying him had been intercepted two miles from the river.

The driver was found unconscious.

The medic had disappeared.

Daniel’s blood marked the floor.

Vivian had planned the theft before the theater.

Clara stood outside the emergency entrance holding Emma.

Alessandro read the message again.

“Daniel is at Villa Moretti.”

“How can you know?”

“She chose the nursery.”

“She wants the story to end where she was humiliated.”

Don Ricci approached.

“The villa is still damaged.”

“Half the security system is down.”

Alessandro looked toward the child.

“She expects us to bring Emma.”

Clara tightened her arms around her daughter.

“We won’t.”

Emma lifted her head.

“Daddy is hurt.”

Clara closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“We have to try big.”

The words broke her resistance.

Alessandro crouched beside Emma.

“You will not enter the house.”

“Vivian wants me.”

“She cannot have you.”

Emma touched the damaged rabbit.

“Mr. Bunny tricked her before.”

Clara looked at the toy.

The account cipher had already been copied.

The rabbit no longer contained anything Vivian needed.

Except emotional power.

Alessandro rose.

“We give her a decoy.”

One hour later, three black vehicles approached Villa Moretti.

Smoke still rose from the archive wing.

Broken glass covered the courtyard.

The main gates hung twisted from their hinges.

A small figure sat in the back seat of the center vehicle.

Brown curls fell around a pale face.

The blue rabbit rested in her arms.

From the nursery window, Vivian watched the convoy arrive.

She did not know the child was a carefully dressed mannequin from the villa’s emergency training room.

The real Emma remained inside an armored vehicle two streets away with Don Ricci.

Clara wore a hidden vest beneath her coat.

Alessandro carried no visible weapon.

They entered the villa together.

No guards greeted them.

The corridor beneath the chandeliers looked almost exactly as it had before the slap.

The silver tray remained beneath the console.

One wineglass had shattered during the fire evacuation.

The other two stood untouched.

Clara looked at the place where she had fallen to one knee.

Less than one night had passed.

Yet she felt years older.

A speaker crackled above them.

“Bring Emma upstairs.”

Vivian’s voice echoed through the villa.

Alessandro looked at the camera.

“You have Daniel.”

“I have what remains of him.”

Clara’s hands tightened.

“Let me see him.”

The screen beside the staircase turned on.

Daniel sat tied to a chair in the nursery.

His skin was pale.

Fresh bandages covered his wound.

Vivian stood behind him.

She held a pistol against his head.

“He needs surgery,” Clara said.

“He needs forgiveness.”

“That may take longer.”

Vivian smiled.

“Bring the child.”

Alessandro lifted the mannequin from the vehicle outside.

Its face remained hidden beneath a hood.

He carried it toward the staircase.

Clara walked beside him.

They climbed slowly.

Every step echoed.

At the top, the nursery door stood open.

Vivian waited inside.

She had changed back into the crimson gown.

Blood stained one side where Marco had shot her.

Her blonde hair hung loose.

The diamonds were gone.

Without them, she looked less like royalty and more like what she had always been.

A frightened woman who mistook control for love.

“Put Emma down,” Vivian said.

Alessandro placed the hooded figure near the crib.

Vivian kept the pistol against Daniel.

“Tell her to sing.”

Clara stood in the doorway.

“She is terrified.”

“Then comfort her.”

Clara approached the mannequin.

Vivian watched closely.

“Remove the hood.”

Clara looked at Alessandro.

He moved slightly toward the window.

Vivian noticed.

“Do not.”

She fired.

The bullet struck the wall beside his head.

Daniel flinched.

Clara pulled off the hood.

Vivian stared at the mannequin.

Her face transformed.

“You.”

Alessandro lunged.

Vivian fired again.

Daniel threw his bound body sideways.

The bullet struck the chair.

Alessandro seized Vivian’s wrist.

They crashed against the crib.

Clara ran toward Daniel.

She cut the ropes with a shard of broken glass.

Vivian struck Alessandro with the pistol.

She tore free and ran into the corridor.

Clara helped Daniel stand.

“You came.”

His voice was barely audible.

“Do not sound surprised.”

“I hoped you would choose Emma.”

“She is safe.”

Relief filled his face.

Alessandro followed Vivian toward the ballroom.

Clara lowered Daniel beside the wall.

“Stay here.”

“That has never worked with either of us.”

“You were shot.”

“So were my plans.”

Despite everything, Clara almost smiled.

She ran after Alessandro.

The ballroom doors stood open.

Vivian waited beneath the largest chandelier.

Twelve empty tables surrounded her.

The room had been prepared for the family gathering that never finished.

She held a detonator in one hand.

Wires ran toward the support columns.

Alessandro stopped inside the doorway.

“You destroyed the archive.”

Vivian smiled.

“I prepared a second fire.”

Clara entered behind him.

Vivian looked at her.

“Where is Emma?”

“Beyond your reach.”

“Nothing is beyond my reach.”

“You could not even keep Marco loyal.”

Her face tightened.

“Marco was weak.”

“Your father betrayed you.”

“He was old.”

“Daniel exposed you.”

“He was a coward.”

“Father Matteo failed you.”

“He lacked faith.”

“Everyone fails you.”

Clara took one step closer.

“Have you considered that you are the failure?”

Vivian pressed the detonator halfway.

Alessandro lifted one hand.

“Do not.”

“You still protect her.”

“I am protecting everyone in this building.”

“No.”

Tears finally entered Vivian’s eyes.

“You looked at her the way you never looked at me.”

Clara realized the final truth.

Vivian had built a criminal conspiracy around an emptiness no amount of power could fill.

“You did not want Alessandro,” Clara said.

Vivian glared at her.

“You wanted proof that someone powerful could choose you.”

“Silence.”

“But every time he refused your cruelty, you felt small.”

“Silence!”

“So you slapped me.”

Vivian’s thumb shook against the detonator.

“You thought humiliating me would make you larger.”

Clara looked around the empty ballroom.

“But now no one is standing beside you.”

Vivian’s face collapsed.

For one second, she looked uncertain.

Then Daniel entered the doorway.

He leaned against the frame.

“Clara.”

Vivian turned.

Alessandro moved.

He crossed the ballroom before her thumb could press down.

He struck the detonator from her hand.

It slid across the marble.

Vivian grabbed a fallen steak knife from one of the tables.

She lunged toward Clara.

Daniel stepped between them.

The blade entered his side.

Clara screamed.

Alessandro seized Vivian.

He twisted the knife from her hand and forced her to the floor.

The ballroom doors opened.

Don Ricci entered with armed officers from an anti-organized-crime unit.

Behind them came representatives of the eleven families.

Every face was turned toward Vivian.

The theater broadcast had been transmitted publicly.

The copied account records had been sent to investigators.

The Circle’s secrets no longer belonged to a handful of powerful people.

They belonged to courts, newspapers, and families of the dead.

Vivian looked around the room.

“No.”

Officers pulled her upright.

“My father controls the prosecutors.”

Vittorio was brought through the doors in handcuffs.

His wounded leg was braced.

He looked at his daughter with hatred.

“Not anymore.”

Vivian stared at him.

“You left me.”

“You betrayed me.”

“You taught me.”

Neither denied the truth.

They were taken away through the same corridor where Vivian had slapped Clara.

No one lowered their eyes this time.

Clara knelt beside Daniel.

Blood spread across his shirt.

A medic pressed bandages against the wound.

Daniel looked at her.

“I am sorry.”

“You have said that.”

“I need to say it again.”

“Then survive.”

“I lied to you.”

“Yes.”

“I let fear make decisions for both of us.”

“Yes.”

“I thought staying away would protect you.”

“It also broke us.”

“I know.”

Clara held his hand.

“I do not know whether I can forgive you.”

“You do not have to.”

“But Emma deserves the chance to know you.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“If I survive.”

“When.”

The medics lifted him.

Emma entered with Don Ricci.

She ran toward the stretcher.

“Daddy!”

Daniel reached for her.

Emma placed the blue rabbit beside his shoulder.

“You can borrow him.”

Daniel smiled through the pain.

“Isn’t he hurt?”

“He got fixed.”

She looked at the rough black stitches.

“He looks different.”

“He is still Mr. Bunny.”

Daniel looked toward Clara.

The lesson was clear.

Some things could be repaired.

They would never look untouched again.

But different did not always mean destroyed.

Three months later, Daniel Bennett walked out of a private rehabilitation clinic.

He used a cane.

His left hand remained weak.

He faced charges for his early work with the Circle.

He also became the government’s primary witness against Vittorio, Vivian, Father Matteo, and more than thirty officials.

Clara did not return to being his wife.

Not immediately.

She rented a small apartment near Emma’s school.

Daniel visited under supervision.

He answered every question Emma asked.

Even the painful ones.

Especially the painful ones.

Marco survived his injuries.

He confessed to placing the device in Luca Moretti’s helicopter.

His testimony reopened cases across Italy.

He received no forgiveness from Alessandro.

But he received something he had denied others for years.

A trial.

Don Ricci established a fund for the families affected by the Circle.

Cesare Bellandi surrendered control of his freight company while investigators examined its records.

The twelve families did not become peaceful overnight.

But they became afraid of secrets.

That was a beginning.

Villa Moretti reopened six months later.

The archive wing became a public foundation office.

Its purpose was to support widows and children left behind by organized crime.

Clara accepted a position managing the program.

Not as a servant.

As its director.

On her first morning, Alessandro found Emma sitting beneath the chandelier with the blue rabbit.

She held a needle and a spool of blue thread.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

“Fixing his ear.”

“It appears fixed.”

“The black thread is ugly.”

Alessandro crouched beside her.

“I know someone who has my mother’s sewing box.”

Emma handed him the needle.

“You do it.”

Clara watched from the corridor.

Alessandro looked toward her.

“Mrs. Bennett?”

She walked closer.

“Yes?”

“I may require assistance.”

“With sewing?”

“With instructions.”

Clara smiled.

“You dislike instructions.”

“I am learning.”

Emma placed the rabbit in his hands.

Alessandro carefully removed the black thread.

Beneath it, the thorn symbol remained.

It no longer frightened the room.

It was only evidence of something defeated.

Emma leaned against Clara.

“Mr. Bunny says Mr. Alessandro still looks sad.”

Alessandro lifted one eyebrow.

“Does he?”

Emma nodded.

“But not as sad.”

Clara looked at him.

“No.”

She said it softly.

“Not as sad.”

Outside, sunlight spread across the lake.

Inside, the chandeliers remained still.

No guards reached for weapons.

No one stepped backward.

May you like

And for the first time since Daniel had hidden the truth inside a child’s toy, the blue rabbit had nothing left to protect.
