THE MOMENT ALESSANDRO RIPPED OPEN THE RABBIT’S EAR, EVERY ARMED MAN IN THE ROOM REACHED FOR HIS GUN.

THE MOMENT ALESSANDRO RIPPED OPEN THE RABBIT’S EAR, EVERY ARMED MAN IN THE ROOM REACHED FOR HIS GUN.

But Alessandro wasn’t watching the guards.

He was watching Vivian.

Because she was the only person who stepped backward.

Minutes earlier, Vivian Romano had slapped Clara Bennett across the face beneath the chandeliers of Villa Moretti.

The sound cracked through the marble corridor like a gunshot.

Clara stumbled, dropping to one knee as the silver tray in her hand tilted dangerously.

Three wineglasses rolled against one another.

She caught the tray before it shattered.

She didn’t scream.

She didn’t fight back.

After eleven months working inside Alessandro Moretti’s estate, Clara had learned that silence could sometimes keep you alive.

Then her three-year-old daughter ran forward.

Emma darted from behind a cream-colored column, her bare feet slapping against the marble.

Her long brown curls bounced around her pale face as she threw herself between Clara and Vivian.

In her arms was the same worn blue rabbit she carried everywhere.

“DON’T TOUCH MY MOMMY!”

The entire corridor went silent.

Twelve of Milan’s most powerful crime families were standing beneath those chandeliers.

Their guards lined the arched doorways.

No one moved.

Vivian slowly looked down at the child.

Her blonde hair was pinned into an elaborate knot covered in diamonds.

More diamonds circled her throat.

She leaned closer.

“Learn your place.”

Then she lifted her hand again.

Clara’s heart stopped.

“Emma, come here.”

But Emma didn’t move.

She squeezed the old rabbit tighter against her chest.

Then a man’s voice came from the archway.

“Vivian.”

One word.

That was all it took.

Her hand froze.

Alessandro Moretti walked into the corridor carrying a glass of red wine.

Black suit.

Black shirt.

No tie.

He didn’t raise his voice.

He never needed to.

Men who controlled entire neighborhoods straightened when he entered.

Alessandro looked first at Vivian’s raised hand.

Then at Emma.

Then at Clara kneeling on the floor with a red mark across her cheek.

He placed his wineglass on the marble console.

Click.

The tiny sound somehow felt louder than the slap.

“Apologize to Mrs. Bennett.”

Vivian stared at him.

“Alessandro, she—”

“Not to me.”

His voice stayed quiet.

That made it worse.

Vivian turned toward Clara.

For half a second, the polite mask disappeared.

Clara saw pure hatred.

“I apologize.”

Alessandro didn’t respond.

Instead, he walked past Vivian and crouched in front of Emma.

At eye level with the little girl, the most feared man in the room suddenly looked almost human.

“Are you hurt, sweetheart?”

Emma thought about it.

Then shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed toward Clara.

“Mommy is.”

Alessandro looked at Clara’s cheek.

Something hardened in his eyes.

Then Emma lifted the old blue rabbit toward him.

“Mr. Bunny says you look sad.”

Someone in the crowd nearly laughed.

Nearly.

Alessandro looked back at her.

“Does he?”

Emma nodded seriously.

“His ear hurts.”

Alessandro reached toward the rabbit.

Clara’s blood ran cold.

“Don’t.”

Every head turned toward her.

Clara immediately realized what she had done.

No employee spoke to Alessandro Moretti like that.

But it was too late.

His fingers were already touching the rabbit’s folded ear.

“Mr. Moretti,” Clara whispered.

“Please.”

The ear had been stitched shut by hand.

Dark blue thread ran through the faded wool.

Alessandro slid one fingernail beneath the seam.

And pulled.

The thread snapped loose.

The rabbit’s ear unfolded.

Then Alessandro stopped breathing.

Hidden inside the protected fabric was a black embroidered symbol.

A narrow circle.

Crossed by three crooked thorns.

Across the room, Don Ricci slowly lowered his glass.

His expression changed completely.

Two bodyguards reached beneath their jackets.

Then four.

Then every armed man in the corridor did the same.

The entire room shifted.

A woman grabbed her husband’s arm.

Someone whispered a name beneath their breath.

Another person immediately told them to shut up.

Alessandro remained crouched beside Emma.

But the warmth had vanished from his face.

“Who gave her this rabbit?”

Clara pulled Emma closer.

“Her father.”

“When?”

“Before he died.”

Alessandro stared at her.

“Your husband died in a road accident.”

Clara swallowed.

“That’s what I was told.”

Silence.

Then, across the corridor…

Vivian Romano took one step backward.

Just one.

Most people didn’t notice.

Alessandro did.

And suddenly Clara understood something terrifying.

Her husband’s death may never have been an accident.

And that little blue rabbit had just exposed someone inside Villa Moretti.
