Chapter 2 - The Message

Six months earlier, Khloe Harrington believed her marriage was simply tired.
She didn’t know it was already dead.
At thirty-six, after three IVF cycles and two miscarriages, Khloe had stopped buying pregnancy tests.
They hurt too much.
Then one rainy Tuesday morning, she took one anyway.
Two pink lines appeared.
She stared at them.
“No.”
She laughed.
Then she cried.
Then she sat on the bathroom floor holding the test against her chest.
For the first time in years, hope felt dangerous and beautiful.
That evening, she put the test inside a small white box with baby booties.
Richard came home after nine.
“Long day?” she asked.
“Always.”
“I have something for you.”
He opened the box.
Khloe waited.
Richard stared at the test.
“That’s… great.”
Her smile faded.
“Great?”
“No, I mean—amazing. Obviously.”
His phone buzzed.
He immediately turned the screen over.
Khloe noticed.
“Who is it?”
“Boston.”
“Boston has a first name now?”
Richard forced a laugh.
“Investor group.”
He kissed her forehead.
“I need to take this.”
That became the pattern.
Late nights.
New passwords.
Unexplained trips.
A perfume Khloe didn’t own.
Then, five months into the pregnancy, the truth walked straight onto her iPad.
A message appeared from someone listed only as V.
Still thinking about last night. Once the dead weight is gone, our baby can have the penthouse nursery.
Khloe stopped breathing.
Our baby.
She opened the thread.
Hundreds of messages.
Hotel reservations.
Photos.
Plans.
Vanessa Kensington.
Richard’s interior designer.
His mistress.
And, apparently, the mother of another child.
Khloe scrolled with shaking fingers.
Then she found a message from Richard.
Be patient. I need Khloe calm until the transfer clears.
Transfer.
Khloe searched deeper.
PDF files.
Bank statements.
Corporate documents.
Millions moving through companies she had never heard of.
She called Harrison.
He answered immediately.
“Cole.”
Khloe tried to speak.
Nothing came out.
Harrison’s voice sharpened.
“Where are you?”
“Home.”
“Is Richard there?”
“No.”
“Did he hurt you?”
Khloe stared at the messages.
“Not yet.”
Two hours later, she sat in Harrison’s office.
He read everything.
Every affair message.
Every cruel joke.
Every hidden account.
When he finished, he closed the tablet.
“You’re not confronting him.”
Khloe wiped her face.
“He’s my husband.”
“No. He’s a hostile party who sleeps in your house.”
“Harry…”
“I mean it.”
She looked down at her belly.
“What do I do?”
Harrison leaned forward.
“You smile.”
“What?”
“You act normal.”
“That’s your advice?”
“That’s my first piece of advice.”
“And the second?”
Harrison picked up his phone.
“We find out what he’s hiding.”
Three days later, Harrison called her.
His first sentence made Khloe sit down.
“Richard isn’t just hiding money.”
“What is he hiding?”
May you like
Harrison paused.
“A federal crime.”
