Chapter 14 - The Last Secret

The Riverside Hotel security archive had supposedly been erased.

It wasn’t.

Owen Price had copied it.

The footage showed Richard entering a service elevator with city inspector Paul Whitman at 11:08 p.m.

Whitman had been investigating forged construction approvals.

At 11:19, the elevator stopped between floors.

At 11:23, Richard exited alone.

At 11:31, Owen entered the service area.

At 1:04 a.m., Whitman’s body was discovered in the alley behind the hotel.

The death had been ruled an accident.

A fall.

Now investigators had another video.

Inside the elevator.

Richard and Whitman arguing.

Whitman said, “I’m reporting all of it.”

Richard answered, “You’ll destroy hundreds of jobs.”

“You forged inspections.”

“You took money too.”

“That was before I knew people could die.”

Richard grabbed him.

Whitman shoved him away.

Then Richard punched him.

Whitman fell backward.

Hit his head.

Stopped moving.

Richard stared at the body.

Then pressed the emergency phone.

Not to call police.

To call Owen.

The rest happened off-camera.

But it was enough.

Richard Harrington was arrested the next morning.

Fraud.

Identity theft.

Evidence tampering.

Conspiracy.

Obstruction.

And eventually charges connected to Whitman’s death.

Reporters surrounded the courthouse.

Richard appeared in handcuffs.

For once, he had no polished answer.

No boardroom smile.

No prepared statement.

Khloe watched from her hospital bed.

Her daughter slept in an incubator down the hall.

Harrison stood beside her.

“Turn it off if you want.”

“No.”

Richard’s attorney spoke to the cameras.

“My client maintains his innocence.”

Khloe gave a tired laugh.

“Of course he does.”

Then Richard looked directly into the camera.

And said:

“Khloe knows the truth.”

Harrison’s expression changed.

Khloe stared at the screen.

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t know.”

Richard continued.

“My wife was involved in our finances. Ask her where the money came from.”

Khloe’s face went white.

Harrison grabbed the remote and shut off the television.

“He’s trying to drag you down.”

“What if people believe him?”

“They won’t after trial.”

“What if a jury does?”

“They won’t.”

“How do you know?”

Harrison looked at her.

“Because he made one mistake.”

“What?”

“He kept thinking you were weak.”

Months later, the trials began.

Vanessa pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and agreed to testify.

Richard refused every deal.

He wanted a jury.

He wanted a fight.

He wanted the world to hear his version.

On the first morning of trial, he walked past Khloe and whispered:

“You think Harrison saved you?”

Khloe met his eyes.

Richard smiled.

“He hasn’t told you everything.”

Khloe turned toward her brother.

May you like

And for the first time—

Harrison looked afraid.
