Chapter 9 - THE BILLION-DOLLAR THEFT

Vanessa was arrested.
And yet she had won.
At least for the moment.
Howard Holdings opened Monday morning with frozen accounts, panicked investors, federal investigators, and reporters surrounding every entrance.
One point eight billion dollars had moved through thirty-seven shell corporations.
Then vanished.
Daniel sat in a federal conference room surrounded by attorneys.
Elena sat beside him.
Across the table, Vanessa wore an orange jail uniform.
Her attorney smiled like they were attending lunch.
“You want the money?”
Vanessa asked.
Daniel stared at her.
“You stole from thousands of employees.”
Vanessa shrugged.
“The Howard family stole first.”
“Where is it?”
“Safe.”
Elena spoke.
“For whom?”
Vanessa looked at her.
“For the people it belonged to.”
“Rebecca?”
Vanessa’s expression flickered.
Elena noticed.
“You didn’t know she might be alive.”
Vanessa said nothing.
“That frightened you.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
Vanessa leaned forward.
“My mother is dead.”
“Then prove it.”
“I don’t owe you proof.”
“No.”
Elena’s voice softened.
“You owe yourself proof.”
Vanessa’s attorney interrupted.
“This is irrelevant.”
Elena ignored him.
“Samuel told you she died.”
Vanessa stared at the table.
“Margaret confirmed it.”
“Two people who stole her company.”
Vanessa looked up.
For the first time, her confidence cracked.
Elena continued.
“You built your entire revenge around the story told by the people you hated.”
Vanessa’s eyes hardened.
“Shut up.”
“What if they lied?”
“I said shut up.”
“What if your mother walked away?”
Vanessa slammed both hands against the table.
“She would never leave me!”
Silence.
There it was.
Not rage.
Pain.
A daughter’s pain.
Vanessa stood.
The guard pushed her back down.
Elena realized something.
Vanessa didn’t know the full truth either.
She had become dangerous.
Cruel.
Criminal.
But someone had shaped that rage.
Someone had fed it for decades.
Ruiz entered carrying a folder.
“We found Rebecca Price.”
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Nobody spoke.
Ruiz placed a photograph on the table.
A woman in her late fifties.
Gray hair.
Thin face.
Alive.
Vanessa stared at it.
“No.”
“She lives in Vermont.”
“No.”
“Under the name Rebecca Hale.”
“No!”
Vanessa pushed away from the table.
“She’s dead!”
Ruiz remained calm.
“She isn’t.”
Vanessa began shaking.
Elena watched twenty-eight years of certainty collapse.
“Does she know?”
Vanessa whispered.
Ruiz nodded.
“She knows who you are.”
“Why didn’t she find me?”
Ruiz hesitated.
“That’s something she wants to tell you herself.”
Vanessa looked terrified.
Not of prison.
Not of Elena.
Of the answer.
Rebecca arrived three hours later.
Vanessa refused to see her.
Then changed her mind.
Elena watched through one-way glass.
Rebecca entered slowly.
Vanessa stared at her.
Rebecca stopped.
“Oh, Vanessa.”
Vanessa’s face twisted.
“Don’t.”
Rebecca began crying.
“My baby.”
“DON’T CALL ME THAT!”
Rebecca covered her mouth.
Vanessa stood.
“You were alive?”
“Yes.”
“All these years?”
“Yes.”
“You knew where I was?”
Rebecca’s silence answered.
Vanessa laughed.
It sounded broken.
“My father told me you died.”
“Samuel wasn’t your father.”
Vanessa froze.
Elena stared through the glass.
Daniel whispered:
“What?”
Rebecca sat down.
“Samuel kidnapped you.”
Vanessa’s face became completely blank.
“He what?”
“He helped Margaret forge the company transfer.”
“When I discovered it, I threatened to go to the police.”
“Samuel took you.”
Rebecca’s hands shook.
“He told me you were dead.”
Vanessa whispered:
“No.”
“He showed me ashes.”
“No.”
“He said Richard had arranged it.”
Vanessa backed away.
Rebecca cried harder.
“I believed him.”
“You abandoned me.”
“I thought you were dead!”
“You never checked?”
“I spent years checking!”
Vanessa slammed her fist against the wall.
“You’re lying!”
“I found you when you were seventeen.”
Vanessa stopped.
“What?”
Rebecca’s voice broke.
“I saw you.”
“Where?”
“Boston.”
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“I followed you for two days.”
“Why didn’t you speak to me?”
Rebecca looked down.
“Because Samuel found me first.”
Silence.
“He said if I ever contacted you, he would kill you.”
Vanessa sat slowly.
Rebecca continued.
“So I disappeared again.”
Vanessa stared at her mother.
Then whispered:
“I destroyed everything for you.”
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“I never asked you to.”
Vanessa began crying.
Not the fake tears from the staircase.
Real ones.
Ugly.
Uncontrolled.
Human.
Then Rebecca said something that made Elena’s blood run cold.
“Samuel wasn’t working alone.”
Vanessa looked up.
“Margaret?”
Rebecca shook her head.
“No.”
“Richard Howard.”
Daniel stepped toward the glass.
Rebecca continued.
“Richard knew everything from the beginning.”
Daniel whispered:
“My father?”
Rebecca nodded.
“And before he died, he tried to make sure the truth died with him.”
Elena remembered Richard’s letter.
Find the ledger.
Trust no one on the board.
Suddenly it looked less like a warning.
And more like damage control.
Rebecca reached into her coat.
The guards moved.
She slowly removed an old cassette tape.
“Richard confessed everything.”
Vanessa stared at it.
Rebecca placed it on the table.
“And he named the person who ordered Samuel to kill me.”
Daniel’s hand tightened around Elena’s.
Rebecca looked toward the one-way glass.
Almost as if she knew Daniel was there.
May you like
Then she said:
“It wasn’t Margaret.”
