Chapter 1 - THE FALL

Vanessa Howard made one mistake when she pushed Elena down the staircase.

She assumed Elena was afraid to fall.

Elena was afraid.

Just not for herself.

The second Vanessa’s hands struck her shoulders, Elena twisted her body and wrapped both arms around her pregnant belly.

Then gravity took her.

Her back hit the first step.

Her shoulder hit the second.

Pain exploded through her ribs.

By the fourth step, Elena could no longer control the fall.

She tumbled sideways.

Her head narrowly missed the iron railing.

Then her body slammed onto the marble floor below.

The sound silenced the mansion.

A champagne glass slipped from someone’s hand.

It shattered.

Nobody moved.

Vanessa stood at the top of the staircase.

For half a second, there was no fear on her face.

Only satisfaction.

Elena saw it.

Then Vanessa noticed the guests staring.

And the satisfaction disappeared.

“Oh my God!”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Elena!”

She rushed halfway down the staircase before stopping dramatically.

“I didn’t mean to!”

Mrs. Margaret Howard pushed through the crowd.

“What happened?”

Vanessa immediately grabbed her arm.

“She attacked me.”

Elena kept her eyes closed.

Vanessa began crying.

“She came toward me screaming.”

“I thought she was going to hit me.”

“I only pushed her away.”

Margaret looked at Elena lying motionless on the floor.

“She’s pregnant, Vanessa.”

“I know!”

Vanessa sobbed harder.

“That’s why I’m terrified.”

Elena felt something warm beneath the back of her head.

Blood.

Her heart hammered.

The pain was real.

Too real.

For one terrifying second, every plan she had made disappeared beneath one thought.

My baby.

She pressed her palm against her stomach.

Nothing.

No movement.

Panic surged through her.

But Elena forced herself to remain still.

Because Vanessa was still talking.

And every word mattered.

“She has been manipulating Daniel for months.”

Vanessa pointed toward Elena.

“She married him for money.”

“She wants this house.”

“She wants the company.”

“She wants all of it.”

Several guests whispered.

Elena slowly moved her fingers beneath her cardigan.

Her phone was still there.

She found the side button.

Pressed twice.

A vibration answered.

The emergency recording had been saved.

Then Elena touched the screen.

One contact had been positioned at the top.

RUIZ.

She tapped it.

The line connected.

Elena raised the phone beneath her hair.

“Detective Ruiz.”

Her whisper was barely audible.

“It happened.”

There was a pause.

“Are you hurt?”

“Yes.”

“The baby?”

“I don’t know.”

Ruiz’s voice hardened.

“We’re coming.”

“Bring everyone.”

Elena ended the call.

Then she heard Vanessa approaching.

Her eyes remained closed.

Vanessa crouched beside her.

“Elena?”

Elena didn’t answer.

Vanessa leaned closer.

For everyone else, her voice sounded concerned.

But when her mouth was inches from Elena’s ear, the whisper changed.

“You should’ve left when I warned you.”

Elena’s blood turned cold.

Vanessa continued smiling.

“You could’ve walked away.”

Elena stayed still.

“Now you might lose the baby too.”

That almost broke her.

Almost.

Then another voice thundered through the foyer.

“GET AWAY FROM MY WIFE!”

Daniel Howard came running through the front doors.

He dropped beside Elena.

“Elena?”

His hands trembled.

“Elena, open your eyes.”

She did.

Daniel went pale.

“Oh God.”

“My baby.”

Her voice cracked.

Daniel looked toward Vanessa.

“What happened?”

Vanessa immediately started crying again.

“She attacked me.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What?”

“She came at me.”

“I pushed her away.”

“I swear, Daniel.”

“I didn’t mean for her to fall.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You pushed my pregnant wife?”

“She attacked me!”

Margaret stepped between them.

“Daniel, stop.”

He looked at his mother.

“Stop?”

“Your wife has been unstable for weeks.”

Daniel froze.

Elena stared at Margaret.

There it was.

Exactly what she had feared.

Margaret wasn’t shocked by Vanessa’s accusation.

She was prepared for it.

Sirens sounded outside.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Who called the police?”

Nobody answered.

Red and blue light flashed through the tall windows.

Daniel looked toward the doors.

Two paramedics entered first.

Behind them came Detective Mateo Ruiz.

Vanessa stepped backward.

Ruiz looked at Elena.

Then at the staircase.

Then directly at Vanessa.

“Vanessa Cross?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Yes?”

Ruiz reached inside his coat.

For one glorious second, Elena thought he was reaching for handcuffs.

Instead, he produced his badge.

“Detective Ruiz.”

Vanessa forced a nervous laugh.

“This was an accident.”

Ruiz nodded slowly.

“Maybe.”

He glanced around the mansion.

“But that’s not the only reason I’m here.”

Margaret’s face went rigid.

Daniel noticed.

“Mom?”

Margaret said nothing.

The paramedics carefully lifted Elena onto a stretcher.

Pain tore through her side.

She gasped.

Daniel grabbed her hand.

“I’m coming with you.”

“No.”

Everyone looked at Elena.

She stared directly at Daniel.

“Stay.”

“Elena—”

“Stay here.”

Her voice was weak.

But firm.

“Watch what happens next.”

Daniel didn’t understand.

Vanessa did.

For the first time that night, real fear entered her eyes.

Ruiz stepped toward the staircase.

He looked up at a tiny decorative fixture above the landing.

Then at another beside the study door.

Then he said the words Elena had been waiting three weeks to hear.

“Nobody leaves this house.”

May you like

Vanessa’s face drained of color.

And Margaret Howard quietly slipped one hand into her pocket.
