Chapter 8 - THREE YEARS BEFORE US

Elise had told me she met Owen through me.

At our first dinner together, she had asked what he did for the company.

I remembered explaining it while he smiled.

Now I knew they had shared a table three years earlier.

Leah checked the event records.

Elise had attended as a paid communications consultant.

Owen had been Calder’s guest.

That didn’t prove a conspiracy.

It proved a lie.

I called Elise through her attorney.

The call was recorded with everyone’s knowledge.

“You knew Owen before you met me.”

“I knew who he was.”

“You worked the same event.”

“Ethan, plenty of people move in the same circles.”

“Why pretend otherwise?”

Her breathing changed.

“Because you would have made it into something.”

“What should I make it into now?”

She started crying.

I used to move toward that sound without thinking.

This time, I waited.

“I loved you,” she said.

“Then tell the police who pushed me.”

“I didn’t see it.”

“Were you on the landing?”

Silence.

Her attorney ended the call.

That afternoon, Grace’s mother’s care provider received notice that the hardship payments were under investigation.

Pending verification, the provider asked how future bills would be covered.

Grace showed me the email.

“They’re using her now,” she said.

Leah arranged temporary payment through a separate account, with clear documentation and no conditions.

Grace thanked her, not me.

I understood why.

She needed help that nobody could later twist into obedience.

Then Martin came in carrying a printed security log.

“The west gate credentials were copied from my office computer.”

“Who had access?”

“Me.

The service technician.

And Owen, last Tuesday.”

It should have relieved me.

Instead, he looked sick.

“There’s something you need to know about that visit.”

Owen had asked him to approve a routine camera maintenance window.

Martin had signed without checking the full list of affected cameras.

“You authorized the outage?” I asked.

“Part of it.”

“You said your credentials were used without permission.”

“They were.

But I gave him the opening.”

I looked at the man who had protected my family for two decades.

His mistake had placed me on that floor.

“Give Leah your access card,” I said.

Martin nodded.

When he left, Grace stayed beside the door.

“You believe he pushed you?”

“No.”

“Then don’t confuse being hurt with being certain.”

Before I could answer, my bank called.

May you like

Someone had attempted to move twelve million dollars using the same authority document.

And the verification call had been answered from inside my hotel.
