Chapter 7 - THE FILE THAT SHOULDN’T EXIST

The police located Nora Voss at a coffee shop near Calder’s offices.
She had left work after noticing a security supervisor waiting by her car.
She went somewhere crowded and called Daniel from a borrowed phone.
By morning, she was sitting with Leah and an investigator.
I joined by video from the hotel.
Nora was thirty-five, with tired eyes and a voice that steadied as she talked.
“Your father retained records of a fund called Briar,” she said.
“Calder wants the archive because those records connect the fund to their current executives.”
My father had died eighteen months earlier.
Owen had overseen the closing of his private investment office.
“What kind of connection?”
“Money diverted from pension investments through inflated management fees.”
Leah asked for facts rather than conclusions.
Nora provided account numbers, document dates, and the location of the files.
She had copied a lawful internal report before Calder’s compliance team withdrew her access.
The report showed transactions.
It did not prove who had authorized them.
That distinction mattered.
My father’s name appeared beside one disputed approval.
I stared at it.
“He signed this?”
“I don’t know,” Nora said.
“That’s why I contacted my brother.
Your father’s retained originals might show what happened.”
Martin remembered driving him to the archive twice in his final month.
“He never said why,” Martin told me afterward.
“Did Owen know?”
“Owen arranged the visits.”
Leah obtained permission from the facility manager to inspect records owned by the Whitfield estate.
A police investigator accompanied her.
I stayed at the hotel, furious with my headache and the doctor’s instructions.
Grace brought coffee I was barely allowed to drink.
“You don’t have to solve everything standing up,” she said.
“Feels like I’ve spent two days lying down while people take my life apart.”
“Then let them bring you something you can use.”
At noon, Leah called.
She had found the original approval.
My father’s signature was absent.
Attached was a handwritten instruction.
DO NOT RELEASE.
SUPPORTING FIGURES DO NOT MATCH.
For the first time, we had something that directly contradicted the copied record.
Then Leah found a second envelope.
It contained a photograph of Elise.
