Chapter 8 - The Things They Threw Away

The bear was gone.
Ethan knew it before Lily finished describing it.
Brown fur.
One missing button.
A crooked red ribbon Olivia had sewn around its neck.
Sabrina had called it unhealthy.
A dirty reminder that kept Lily trapped in grief.
Ethan had let her clear the nursery closet.
Now Lily stood in front of an empty shelf.
“She promised she wouldn’t throw him away.”
Her voice was quiet.
That hurt Grace more than screaming would have.
Mrs. Alvarez came up behind them.
“Which bear?”
“The brown one,” Ethan said.
The cook’s expression changed.
“Wait here.”
She returned carrying a laundry bag.
Inside were a faded blanket, three picture books, and the bear.
Lily made a sound so small it barely reached the hallway.
Mrs. Alvarez held it out.
“I couldn’t put those things in the trash.”
Ethan looked at the woman who had worked in his house for fourteen years.
“Thank you.”
She nodded once.
Grace examined the bear without pulling it from Lily’s arms.
Along its back, newer thread crossed an old seam.
“We need the police here before we open it,” she said.
Lily hugged the bear tighter.
“Will it hurt him?”
“I’ll fix every stitch.”
Officer Ruiz arrived with a detective named Jonah Bell.
They photographed the toy.
Then Grace carefully opened the seam.
Inside, wrapped in a plastic sleeve, was a small memory card and a folded note.
Ethan recognized Olivia’s handwriting.
For Ethan.
Please make a copy before you speak to anyone.
He sat down.
For months, he had imagined what he would give for one more message from her.
Now it lay in his palm, and he could hardly bear to read it.
Detective Bell took the card for controlled copying.
Ethan kept looking at the note.
Grace stitched the bear while Lily watched.
No one spoke for several minutes.
Then Bell’s phone rang.
He listened.
Asked two questions.
Turned away.
When he faced them again, his expression had hardened.
“There are financial files on the card.
And an audio recording.”
Ethan rose.
“Of what?”
“A conversation between your wife and Sabrina Vale.”
Lily’s needle-worn bear sat between Grace’s hands.
Ethan heard his own voice as if from another room.
“What did Sabrina say?”
Bell hesitated.

Then he answered.
“She told your wife accidents happen to people who won’t let things go.”
