Chapter 2 - The Wrong Question

Ethan felt every voice in the ballroom fade.

“What did you say?”

Lily pressed closer.

Sabrina struggled to her feet with Miles’s help.

“Ethan, she’s frightened.

Don’t make her repeat something she doesn’t understand.”

He looked at his fiancée.

“How would you know what she understands?”

Sabrina blinked.

It was the first time that evening he had questioned her.

Behind the service doors, Grace stopped resisting.

“Ask your daughter where Sabrina was taking her.”

Ethan held out one hand to the guards.

“Wait.”

The ballroom had become a sea of raised phones.

He looked at the event manager.

“Clear the room.”

“Mr. Caldwell—”

“Now.”

Guests began moving toward the exits, whispering into their phones.

Sabrina reached for Lily.

The girl flinched so hard that Ethan stepped between them.

For a moment, Sabrina’s face changed.

Then the hurt returned.

“You’re letting a maid turn your child against me?”

“No,” Ethan said.

“I’m asking a question.”

A patrol officer arrived from the hotel entrance.

Another followed.

Miles immediately approached them.

“Household employee assaulted the bride without warning.

We have witnesses.”

Grace lifted her chin.

“Check his right jacket pocket.”

Miles laughed once.

“This woman is clearly unstable.”

“The syringe went under the dessert table.

He picked it up.”

The older officer, whose nameplate read RUIZ, looked at Miles.

“Sir, keep your hands where I can see them.”

Miles hesitated.

Only a second.

But Ethan saw it.

“There’s a medical disposal container in the service hall,” Miles said.

“I removed a dangerous object.”

Ruiz stared at him.

“You just said there was nothing under the table.”

“I meant nothing remained.”

Grace watched Ethan’s face.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

Officer Ruiz asked her partner to check the container.

Sabrina pressed a cloth against her mouth.

“It’s prescribed medication.

I carry it for emergencies.”

“Whose emergencies?” Grace asked.

Sabrina ignored her.

Lily’s fingers tightened around Ethan’s jacket.

Officer Ruiz crouched.

“Lily, you’re not in trouble.”

The child looked at her father.

He almost said, Tell the officer what happened.

Instead, he swallowed.

“I’m listening.”

Lily drew a shaky breath.

“Sabrina said we had to go upstairs before the pictures.”

“Why?”

“She said I needed to be quiet tonight.”

Sabrina shook her head.

“That’s completely out of context.”

Ruiz stood.

“We’ll speak separately.”

The second officer returned carrying a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was the syringe.

Miles looked away.

And Ethan realized that his head of security had just lied to him in front of two police officers.
