Chapter 12 - THE PRICE OF CHANGE

The arrest stunned New York.

For years, newspapers had printed Lorenzo Rossi’s name beside words like untouchable and feared.

Now cameras captured him walking into a federal courthouse with his injured arm in a sling.

He did not speak to reporters.

He did not threaten anyone.

He did not hide.

His lawyers negotiated.

Lorenzo provided records tying Dante to the bombing, the attempted poisoning of Leo, illegal transfers, and several violent operations.

In return, prosecutors separated the case against Lorenzo from Dante's conspiracy.

That did not make Lorenzo innocent.

Hunter understood that.

So did he.

He faced charges related to the legitimate companies he had used to conceal criminal income.

Some older allegations could not be proven.

Others could.

For the first time in his life, Lorenzo stopped purchasing exits.

He accepted responsibility where evidence supported it.

The decision divided the Rossi organization overnight.

Some men called him weak.

Others quietly disappeared.

Nico stayed.

“I work for the family.”

Lorenzo looked at him through the courthouse holding-room glass.

“The family is Leo.”

Nico nodded.

“Then I work for Leo.”

Hunter remained at the estate with the baby.

She was not legally his guardian.

Elena was temporarily appointed under supervision while the investigation continued.

To Hunter's surprise, Elena did not fight.

“I spent my life protecting the wrong son from consequences.”

She stood beside Leo’s crib.

“I won't make that mistake again.”

Hunter watched her carefully.

Trust would take time.

But Elena showed up.

Every feeding.

Every appointment.

Every night Leo struggled to sleep.

She never asked Hunter to forgive her.

That helped.

Tommy was charged with extortion-related offenses and cooperation in intimidation.

His role had been smaller than Dante’s.

But it was real.

Before entering a plea, he asked to speak with Hunter.

She almost refused.

Then she agreed.

They met with attorneys present.

Tommy looked nothing like the man she once loved.

Or perhaps he looked exactly like him.

Hunter had simply stopped imagining another version.

“I’m sorry about Lily.”

Hunter stared at him.

“You've said that before.”

“I mean it now.”

“That doesn't change anything.”

“I know.”

He looked at the table.

“I was drunk.”

“Yes.”

“I was angry.”

“Yes.”

“I didn't mean for you to fall.”

Hunter's face hardened.

“That is the sentence men use when they want consequences to care about their intentions.”

Tommy looked up.

“I loved you.”

“No.”

Hunter’s voice stayed calm.

“You wanted me.”

“You depended on me.”

“You controlled me.”

“Sometimes you were kind.”

“None of those things automatically become love.”

Tommy cried.

Hunter did not.

“I hope you become better.”

He looked surprised.

“You do?”

“Yes.”

“But you will become better somewhere far away from me.”

Hunter stood.

“And you will never use Lily's name to make yourself feel forgiven.”

She left.

Outside, Lorenzo was waiting under guard.

His lawyers had arranged a brief release pending final proceedings.

Hunter frowned.

“You didn't have to come.”

“Yes, I did.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought you might need someone.”

Hunter looked toward the building.

“I did.”

They walked toward the car.

Lorenzo noticed her shaking hands.

“Did he apologize?”

“Yes.”

“Did it help?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Hunter looked at him.

“That’s a strange thing to say.”

“Some apologies are supposed to help the person giving them.”

“Not the person receiving them.”

Hunter considered.

“When did you become wise?”

“I was shot.”

“Apparently it improved you.”

“Barely.”

They reached the car.

Lorenzo stopped.

“My sentencing hearing is in six weeks.”

Hunter already knew.

“How bad?”

“Possibly eighteen months.”

She tried not to react.

“Possibly less.”

“And Rossi Holdings?”

“I’m selling the companies tied to the old organization.”

“What about the legitimate businesses?”

“Putting them into a clean trust for Leo.”

“Sophia would approve.”

“I hope so.”

Hunter looked at him.

“What about you?”

Lorenzo seemed confused.

“What about me?”

“When all this is over.”

“You keep talking about what Leo gets.”

“What do you get?”

He stared at her.

No one had asked him that.

Finally he said.

“A chance to find out who I am when people aren’t afraid of me.”

Hunter smiled faintly.

“That might be terrifying.”

“For them or me?”

“Both.”

Lorenzo laughed.

May you like

It was the first real laugh she had heard from him.

And for the first time, Hunter realized she wanted to hear it again.
