Victoria took Emma to a private hotel room.
For the first time, she looked carefully at the girl.
The same blue eyes.
The same small birthmark.
Charlotte’s daughter.
“Where is your mother?”
Emma looked down.
“She told me not to trust anyone.”
Victoria felt the pain in those words.
“She died?”
Emma nodded.
“She told me one person would help me.”
Victoria swallowed.
“Who?”
Emma pointed at the photograph.
“You.”
Victoria looked away.
Because she remembered the night Charlotte came to her.
Charlotte had been terrified.
Someone powerful was hunting her.
Someone close.
Victoria had promised:
