Chapter 7 - THE SHERIFF WHO OWNED THE TOWN

The first thing I learned about Rick Barnes was simple.

He didn’t become powerful because people respected him.

He became powerful because people were afraid of him.

Ethan’s folder sat on the table in front of me.

Page after page.

Complaints.

Witness statements.

Missing evidence.

Cases that disappeared before they reached a courtroom.

For years, people had tried to expose him.

And every single time...

They failed.

I looked at Ethan.

“How many people know about this?”

He leaned back.

“Enough.”

“That’s not an answer.”

His eyes hardened.

“Because the people who know are either scared, bought, or dead.”

The room went quiet.

I looked back at the documents.

“Dead?”

Ethan nodded.

“Three witnesses over the last five years.”

My jaw tightened.

“Accidents?”

He gave a humorless smile.

“You already know the answer.”

I did.

Because I had spent my life recognizing patterns.

A person disappears.

A witness changes their story.

A case gets buried.

Different names.

Same method.

Someone was cleaning up.

And Rick Barnes was holding the broom.

My phone rang.

Sarah.

I answered immediately.

“Hey.”

Her voice was shaking.

“Dennis
”

I stood.

“What happened?”

“It’s Tyler.”

My heart stopped.

“What about him?”

“He woke up.”

I let out a breath.

“Is he okay?”

A pause.

Then she said:

“He asked for you.”

I closed my eyes.

“I’m coming.”

When I returned to Tyler’s room, he was awake.

His face looked tired.

Older.

Like someone had stolen years from him overnight.

“Hey, buddy.”

He looked at me.

“Dad.”

I sat beside him.

“How are you feeling?”

He looked down.

“I hate this.”

Those words hurt more than anything.

“What?”

“My legs.”

He swallowed.

“I used to run every day.”

His voice cracked.

“Now I can’t even get out of bed.”

I grabbed his hand.

“Tyler
”

“No, Dad.”

He looked at me.

“I need you to be honest.”

I stayed quiet.

“Am I ever going to be normal again?”

I hated that question.

Because I had no answer.

“You’re still my son.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

I looked away.

For the first time in years, I felt helpless.

A feeling I hated more than fear.

Then Tyler whispered:

“Why did he do it?”

I looked back.

“Who?”

“The sheriff.”

My hands tightened.

“Tyler
”

“I want to know.”

I took a breath.

“He thought nobody would stop him.”

Tyler stared at me.

“Are you going to stop him?”

The room went silent.

Because my son knew.

Somehow...

He knew.

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

His eyes changed.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“Don’t become someone you hate.”

That sentence hit harder than any bullet.

Because Tyler didn’t know my past.

But somehow...

He knew my battle.

That night, Ethan and I met at an abandoned warehouse outside town.

The rest of the team arrived.

Four people.

Four faces from a life I buried.

Marcus Hill.

Former intelligence specialist.

The man who could find anyone.

Jake Turner.

Former sniper.

The calmest person I ever knew.

Lisa Grant.

Cyber operations.

The woman who could break into a system faster than most people could unlock their phone.

And Ethan.

My second-in-command.

They all looked at me.

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus smiled.

“Never thought I’d see the day.”

I looked at him.

“What day?”

“The day Reaper comes back.”

I shook my head.

“I’m not Reaper.”

Jake laughed quietly.

“Sure.”

Lisa opened her laptop.

“You might want to see this.”

The screen showed security footage.

A diner.

The night Tyler was shot.

I watched carefully.

There was Tyler.

There was Barnes.

But then I saw something.

Someone else.

Standing in the shadows.

A man wearing a black jacket.

I leaned closer.

“Who is that?”

Lisa froze the image.

“I don’t know.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“That’s impossible.”

“Why?”

Because Ethan recognized him.

His face changed.

“Because that man died eight years ago.”

Nobody spoke.

I looked at the screen.

The dead man was watching my son.

And suddenly I understood.

Rick Barnes wasn’t the beginning.

He was just a piece.

A piece controlled by someone else.

I looked at Ethan.

“Find out who he is.”

Ethan stared at the screen.

Then whispered:

“Dennis
”

“What?”

He pointed.

The man in the video had something on his hand.

A tattoo.

A symbol.

A symbol I had seen before.

During my last mission.

A symbol connected to the darkest operation of my career.

The same operation that was supposed to disappear forever.

And the same operation that almost got me killed.

Ethan looked at me.

“Your past didn’t stay buried.”

I stared at the screen.

“No.”

May you like

My voice dropped.

“It came looking for me.”
