Chapter 3 - THE NAME I BURIED

For seventeen years, I lived like a ghost.

Not the kind people fear.

The kind people ignore.

I walked through courthouse hallways every night carrying a mop bucket, and nobody ever wondered who I really was.

That was the point.

Being invisible kept my family safe.

Or at least...

That was what I believed.

The next morning, I sat beside Tyler’s hospital bed while sunlight came through the window.

He looked smaller than I remembered.

Not because he had changed.

Because someone had taken something from him.

His confidence.

His future.

His belief that the world was fair.

“Dad?”

I looked up.

“Yeah?”

“Are you angry?”

The question caught me off guard.

I forced a smile.

“Of course I’m angry.”

Tyler looked at the ceiling.

“I’ve never seen you angry before.”

That hurt.

Because he was right.

For seventeen years, I made sure my son never saw the other side of me.

The side that knew exactly how to hurt people.

The side that had survived places where survival was the only rule.

“I’m not angry at you,” I said.

He looked at me.

“I know.”

A pause.

“You’re angry because you couldn’t protect me.”

The room went quiet.

I looked away.

Because that was the truth.

I had protected strangers.

I had protected people I barely knew.

But when my own son needed me...

I wasn’t there.

Tyler reached for my hand.

“Dad.”

I looked back.

“You didn’t fail me.”

Those words almost broke me.

Before I could answer, Sarah walked in.

Her face was tired.

She had been crying.

Again.

“How is he?”

Tyler smiled weakly.

“I’m okay, Mom.”

Sarah kissed his forehead.

Then she looked at me.

“Can we talk?”

I knew that tone.

I followed her into the hallway.

“What happened?”

She looked nervous.

“Dennis... what did you do last night?”

I stayed silent.

That was enough.

Her eyes narrowed.

“I knew it.”

“Sarah—”

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“I know that look.”

“What look?”

“The one you had before you left.”

I froze.

Because Sarah had seen it before.

Years ago.

Before Tyler was born.

Before I promised I was done.

“You don’t understand.”

She stepped closer.

“Then explain.”

I looked at her.

“I need to protect our son.”

“I know.”

“No, Sarah.”

My voice lowered.

“You don’t know who we’re dealing with.”

She stared at me.

“Then tell me.”

I couldn’t.

Because once she knew...

There was no going back.

That night, I met Ethan.

The old warehouse smelled like dust and rust.

The perfect place for ghosts.

Ethan placed a file on the table.

“Rick Barnes.”

I opened it.

Photos.

Reports.

Complaints.

Everything.

“This is impossible.”

Ethan nodded.

“That’s what powerful people do.”

He pointed at the documents.

“They make impossible things disappear.”

I flipped through pages.

Then stopped.

A name appeared.

Blackridge Solutions.

My hands froze.

Ethan noticed.

“You know them.”

I looked up.

“I thought they were gone.”

“They weren’t.”

The silence between us was heavy.

Because we both knew what that meant.

My son’s shooting wasn’t random.

Someone had planned it.

Someone who knew my past.

Someone who wanted me to wake up.

I closed the file.

“Find out everything.”

Ethan looked at me.

“You sure?”

I stared at the sheriff’s picture.

“No.”

I walked toward the door.

“But I’m doing it anyway.”

As I left, Ethan said one sentence.

“Dennis.”

I stopped.

“When you open that door
”

I looked back.

“You might not like what’s waiting.”

I nodded.

“I already saw what was waiting.”

I looked toward the hospital.

“They shot my son.”

May you like

A pause.

“Now they get me.”
