Chapter 2: The Shadow Behind the Walls

Liam had spent twenty years building an empire.
He had defeated ruthless competitors.
He had survived betrayal from business partners.
He had walked into rooms filled with powerful men who believed they could intimidate him.
But nothing had prepared him for the sight of his daughter shaking in his arms.
Because enemies outside the mansion were easy to fight.
You could see them.
You could prepare for them.
But an enemy hiding inside your own home?
That was something far more dangerous.
Liam carried Lily upstairs himself.
He refused to let anyone else touch her.
Not the staff.
Not the security team.
Not even the family members who rushed toward him when they heard what happened.
“Liam, what happened?” his wife, Victoria, asked as she approached.
Her face showed concern.
At least, it looked like concern.
But something about her reaction made Liam pause.
She wasn’t shocked enough.
She wasn’t terrified enough.
She looked more like someone trying to understand how much he already knew.
“My daughter was attacked in our kitchen,” Liam said coldly.
The entire hallway went silent.
The servants lowered their eyes.
The security guards exchanged nervous glances.
But Victoria remained still.
“That’s impossible,” she said quickly.
Liam looked at her.
“Impossible?”
“Yes. The security system was active. Nobody entered the property.”
Her answer came too fast.
Almost rehearsed.
Liam noticed.
He noticed everything.
For years, people had underestimated him because he rarely showed emotion.
They thought silence meant weakness.
They were wrong.
Silence was where Liam collected information.
“Interesting,” he said quietly.
Victoria frowned.
“What?”
“You immediately knew nobody entered.”
A flash of panic crossed her eyes.
Only for a second.
But Liam saw it.
And that was enough.
An hour later, Liam sat inside his private security room.
Every camera feed from the mansion appeared on the massive screens.
The house looked peaceful.
Almost beautiful.
A place where nothing bad could happen.
But Liam knew better.
A beautiful cage was still a cage.
“Run the footage from the kitchen,” Liam ordered.
The security chief, Marcus, hesitated.
“Sir…”
Liam turned.
“Play it.”
The footage appeared.
Lily walked into the kitchen alone.
She was carrying her favorite stuffed rabbit.
Then the screen went black.
Exactly three minutes.
Then it returned.
Lily was on the floor.
Crying.
Bruised.
Liam’s jaw tightened.
“The cameras were disabled,” Marcus said quietly.
“By who?”
Marcus swallowed.
“That’s the problem.”
He looked at the screen.
“The override came from inside the mansion.”
Liam stared ahead.

Someone had not broken into his house.
Someone had opened the door for darkness.
